Hi guys, I just made my first NFC purchase at a Tim Hortons restaurant. When I asked if I could 'tap to pay', she took out her bar code scanner. I said, no I'm tapping my device to pay, then showed her my Z10 with the device tapping animation of the Tim Hortons app with no bar code. So I tried to tap it but it wouldn't take it. She then called her manager and I showed the manager my Z10.

The manager said only Blackberrys support tap to pay. I said this IS a BlackBerry. I tried to tap it again and it worked. It turns out I was tapping it wrong.

So for future 'tappers', make sure to tap near the top portion if the device.

Nice! I've wanted to give it a try, but didn't want to be that guy in line if it didn't work. From what I understand it only works in some Canadian cities; not sure it's supported in my area.

I think as long as they have a terminal like this, you can tap to pay.

I've used it quite a bit in Tim Horton's restaurants here in Winnipeg. Most but not all have the tap to pay enabled. I was at one location yesterday where it would not work ; the server said they had just watched a video about it and would soon be getting it.
I usually remove the case from the phone first when doing tap to pay.

I used to use it every day at Tim Hortons. But early last week NFC stopped working on my Z10 and I haven't figured out why or how to fix it. It was the only use I ever had for NFC, too.

Check that the back cover is firmly attached. There are contacts that need to touch the contacts on the phone.

I have been using this at Tim's for a while. Most of the Locations in Winnipeg work for tap to pay. The Timmy Me app will tell you if the Tim's you are at will work with NFC.

As you can see from the screen shot the ones Locations with the Small Tim card between the cutlery and the 24 symbol are Tap to pay enabled locations.

All you gotta say is you wanna pay using tims card, then they give you the terminal that you would traditionally use for debit cards and you tap your phone like you would with a debit card

I use my Z10 in an enclosed case with NFC..no problems. When using tap and pay I make sure that the middle of my Z10 is over the screen of the pay terminal. Works every time.

In the case of Tim Hortons it uses the balance of your Tim card which you can reload in the app with a credit card. The App will show you the balance of the card in app.

It's like a virtual gift card.

Or even more convenient, set your card to auto reload from a credit card. For example, mine is set to auto reload to $20 any time it falls under $15.

I do the same too - I first bought a Tims Card for $20; the first time setting up auto reload, we must first go online to Tim Hortons website to set up a credit card payment info and you're good to go from then on. I do it all on my Z30's Browser since I rarely use my laptop nowadays ever since I switched back to BlackBerry 10.

I notice that my transaction will go through quicker with Tap to Pay on my Z30 when I tap the back of my phone (between the camera and the BlackBerry logo) against the terminal when it displays a message to Tap or Swipe to pay (it works really well even with the phone case on). I don't know where the NFC chip is placed inside the Z30 so I think it might be below the camera and the BlackBerry logo soldiered behind the non-removable battery.

On the Z10, the NFC chip is placed inside the back door behind the BlackBerry logo (I think - correct me if I'm wrong lol) so tapping that spot on the back of the Z10 against the terminal should make the transaction work like a breeze.

Or even more convenient, set your card to auto reload from a credit card. For example, mine is set to auto reload to $20 any time it falls under $15.

Is there a tap to pay app that works with everything yet? A Google Wallet type thing? I see those tappay terminals everywhere now. BBM Money? Seems like a no-brainer.
