Depends on the company. But I don't do contracts anyway.

If i so much as dislike my carrier - I'm free to walk to a competitor at any time. Makes them earn it a little bit better

Plus everyone offers some kind of monthly discount if you have an unlocked self owned phone.

Verizon "adjusts" the on-contract pricing like this at their whim.

Call instead of trying to buy online. When I bought my Z30 on January 28th the Verizon site was 199.95 and I had seen it on Amazon for $99.95 but my I would lose my grandfathered unlimited data plan and I didn't like the options presented so I called Verizon and ended up getting the phone for $99.95 and 6GB data for the price of 2GB. I was transferred a few times to get it approved but once they think they may lose a sale or customer it's amazing how willing they are to accommodate you.

When I upgraded at the end of February the z30 was 99 online and 199 in store. In store, they were offering 100 dollar credit if I turned in my old BlackBerry. I ordered on line.
