Interesting theory but I doubt it. I think launching with the feature set we have now (if that was possible) could have potentially led to more sales, a better received launch and less problems. I doubt BlackBerry would forgo that potential so some developers could put flashlight apps in BlackBerry World.

Half baked to me means core features (i.e. Calling / SMS / BBM) do not work at all. I.e. a dev build for example.

Tweaking features, UI, adding more SDK frameworks, making things pretty. That's just maturing. It went exactly as they intended.

I recently bought a Z10 for my cousins birthday present on Telus. I was going to sideload some apps for her before I gave it to her. Out of the box it was still on OS 10.0. I played around with it a bit and man has the OS come a LONG way. 10.2.1 blows it out of the water.

However I got thinking. Many super basic features we have in 10.2.1 was never on 10.0 on launch. For example battery percentage indicator, flashlight, larger pull down settings, screen brightness changer, resource manager, and the list goes on. Now I'm no developer but to me abattery percentage indicator is probably pretty easy to put in, and would not of caused further delay. However BlackBerry purposely didn't put these features in so developers could make battery percentage indicator apps, flashlight apps and so forth to inflate the number of apps in BlackBerry World. I mean think about it. If BlackBerry gave us 10.2.1 features in the beginning then I would never have downloaded or searched for at least 20 apps I had on my phone.

So BlackBerry purposely half baked 10.0 to provide lots of room for developers to fill consumer need, this pushing up app count. What do you guys think?

Should edit that last part about the screen brightness to say "from Quick Settings" since it's always been in Settings > Display. And the rest, those are completely new on a BlackBerry. They didn't exist native on BBOS either.

OP, my take on BB10.0 was that BBRY released what they could, as they had to make the launch deadline, which had already been delayed at least twice. Yes there were some bugs and missing features, but BBRY certainly did not as part of their strategy intentionally release a "half-baked" system in order to get 3rd party developers to fill in the missing features, as you imply.

The annoying part of the 10.0 launch were the numerous BBOS features missing from BB10...great 'strategy' to keep the existing customer base...And as we all know most of those features were so simple it's baffling they were missing...

Maybe the only thing that was not half baked was Thorsten's golden parachute execution...

Didn't iOS not have mms. I think some people put way to much thought into certain things. No matter what OS gets brought up, anyone can say it wasn't ready for prime time.

    100% agree with you.

Z10 was expected to be released (as far as I remember) in October 2012. I was prior at a meeting with BlackBerry and they showed me a presentation with these informations. The day after, it was announced to be delayed to November and then again to January 30th.
The months may not be correct, but you get the idea.

This also led to the fact that Z10 was put to market with 6 month old technology, which is quite a bit if you concider how fast mobile platforms are developing.

My personal perception was that BlackBerry underestimated how much work it took to make a mobile platform ready on top of QNX.
They started with PlayBook but had a huge task in front of them, as the development tools was not in place. It was a "race" between getting the SDK (both internally and for developers) and the OS ready.

IMHO they did it at the right time. The device was feature complete as a first generation BB10 and stable enough except from a few reboot issues that were fixed in a later update.

At BB Jam a BB emplyee told me: "You would not have enjoyed the device back in November. It was not ready."

Jan 2013 was way too late for many reasons (iOS/Android), but that's another story.

BlackBerry has worked really hard ever after. 10.1 was primarily bug fixes. 10.2.x was bug fixes and features.
Words are telling 10.3 should have some TAT magic.
"Someone told me" TAT has lot's of ideas and designs that did not make it into 10.0, because "Canada was afraid to loose their conservative, business customers".

But I am very close to 100% sure, that OP is 100% wrong :-)

My strong suspicion is that it was nothing to do with development per se and everything to do with the ridiculous amount of time and legal cost it takes to check whether you are possibly in breach of someone's software patent. A significant lawsuit in the US could have killed BlackBerry stone dead.

In retrospect the decision to release 10.0 was a terrible one. It was extremely buggy. I almost returned my Z10 except that 10.1 came out just before I was to return it and that is what made me keep the phone. 10.1 at least stopped the constant re-booting that I was experiencing plus it resolved a host of other bugs. If they would have had at least 10.1 at launch, things would have been much better for BBRY. I don't know if they can recover from that terrible launch. I do hope they can re-launch the platform successfully.

i hope not, itd have been pretty crappy of them to release a half baked os to make things more difficult for their customers, let app devs waste time making the apps when they could have been working on something else and then release the update rendering those apps totally useless and therefore theyd be basically spam apps/zombie apps never to be downloaded again.

i highly doubt thats the reason though

The answer is no, BBRY *always* release a half-a**sed product and then build on it afterwards. That is RIMberry's MO.

    Yeah, no

Why would they shoot themselves in the foot for developers? I guess they really would have liked to release something as nice as 10.2.1 (or maybe even 10.3!), but they ran out of time. The OS couldn't be delayed anymore, it was already pretty late. It was to release it with current features to try and grab some market share and try to get an update out as fast as possible or delay the OS, get more time and bad press and risk more sales

On some level, all OSs leave functionality out to allow themselves more time to focus on core issues or maybe to allow devs to fill users needs. Otherwise devs would have nothing to do and be disinterested. I draw the line at giving BB the credit the OP does. These threads have a interesting theme lol.

If they ad released in 2012 as originally intended BB10 would have been playbook OS 2.0 with a phone app.

I think some forget how close we were to getting that out of the box.

It was already reasonably mature and developed at launch, they have just been adding mostly bells and whistles. Really nice bells and whistles but my point stands.
