    Hello,

I am going to be visiting Japan in the next few weeks. Anybody have experience using a z30 there?

Can I get a local sim card or is there an international sim card that is worthwhile?

Just looking for limited talk time but prefer the use of data for Bbm and some browser access.

    Hi
I travell often to japan with a company phone. Is your device private?
If so please note you cant buy a local sim in Japan (forbidden by law).
I would recommend ordering a prepaid sim on the internet (with or without an interent data plan). You can have it shipped to your home or ask to pick it up at the airport/hotel.

Last September, I went to visit my family in Japan. I was not able to use my Q (unlocked) with Japanese 3G SIM which worked fine with my iPhone. So I don't think you could use Z30. However, you can use 9900 with rental SIM for call.
Unless you have Japanese address, you won't be able to buy pre-paid SIM. You can buy data only SIM from B-mobile online then receive it at the airport. But it is so slow, it's not very useful except for BBM or emails.
Best option is to rent SIM for your unlocked iphone (sprint model is same as Japanese model) or android to use it with. Sorry, not for BlackBerry. Or rent mobile wifi unit & use your Z with wifi.
But again not too cheap either. There are not many public wifi spot in Japan. So options are quite limited unfortunately.

Thanks. I guess I will just have to stick with the free wifi offered at the hotel.

As far as I know, hotel wifi is not free. At least hotels I stayed. Lots of wifi spot but none of them were free. Only free wifi I found were at the airport & Starbucks. You have to register but easy to do so.
How long you're gonna be there & how much you're willing to spend?

I have never tried SIM cards issued by non-Japanese carriers but please refer to http://forums.crackberry.com/showthread.php?p=9953130 .

First of all, which cellphone vendor are you using? If you're on T-mobile, you are golden. Nothing to do ... just use the phone as if you are in U.S., keeping in mind of data and voice usage. Voice calls are 10cents/min in or out, if I remember right.

You could also try getting a japan only sim card from Hanacell. The beauty of this one is that all incoming calls are free.

Just an update to this. I ended just renting a mobile hot spot. I was more interested in maintaining a data connection rather the voice.

It actually came in more handy as I had wifi access where I went, which meant I could use gps to find my way around and find points of interest.
