I'm heading on a little Vancouver to San Francisco road trip in a week, and I can't find the charger for my camera. It's a few years old, and nothing special though I think it takes nice photos and I've used it for a few trips to Europe etc.

Anyway, I was asking my parents to lend me a camera or something and it suddenly dawned on me that now that I have a Q10, maybe it's enough for a fairly casual trip? I have honestly only used it so far to take shots of food, kids and selfies (I'm the worst kind of person) so I'm not sure how it would fare. I'm not dying for a professional album of the trip, but I'd like decent shots for posterity. Do you think I will be standing by the Golden Gate Bridge cursing my Q10?

    Thanks CB

Personally, I am not that crazy about the camera on the Q10. I have taken a few pictures with them and have not been too impressed. I might just be spoilt by the camera on my Samsung Note 3, but I really doubt that is the case. I would suggest going ahead and asking your parents for their camera and having it as a backup. Just my own opinion.

You could also try taking some pictures on your Q10 from a distance and viewing them on a computer before your trip (probably your best bet). Good luck and hope you have a great and "memorable" trip

To be honest you'd be better off buying a few disposable film cameras, the phone photos are ok but if you're thinking of printing them any disposable camera would do a much better job.

I usually bring a 1950 Zeiss Ikon with me that needs no batteries and takes amazing photos

Great photos! My dad is still on an old film camera... his "woodburning" camera, as he calls it. If only I could find the damn charger for the camera...

I went to print some photos from my Q10 last year and it just happened to have a few film scans on the memory card too so I thought I'd print a few of them. The difference was night and day on print, the film scans, even low resolution, were sooooo much better quality when printed.

Grab a few 400 ISO disposables either way, just in case

One thing about the Q10 I like is how square pictures fill up the screen. I prefer square format.

This past christ$as on a whim I flew to ottawa for the day/night. I took my dslr and the q obviously. I don't expect much from any phonew camera since I am used to shooting race cars and printing 16x20s but used the q basically to post to facebook and send off quick photos to some family.

With any camera decision it depends on what your final goal is, if you know you arnt going to print and just what the photos for facebook and they are meant to be viewed on a screen then I would be ok with just a q but I'd probably still have the dslr is my bag.

The best thing to do is go out take some photos with the q10, load them up on your computer, you can even print a couple for less than $5 and then you will know for yourself.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys! As much as I'd like to print stuff, I haven't even put my last Europe or New York trips on facebook, let alone print them. So realistically it's unlikely I will. Still haven't quite decided (hoping I will magically find my camera charger!) but I will be sure to share some Q10 snaps with y'all either way.

I agree with Belfastdispatcher when it comes to printing quality. However the Q10 camera is really, really prone to the overall lightning conditions. Picture quality is much better on a sunny day than it is on a mostly cloudy one. Noise is the problem here.

If you can find your charger, you should take your compact camera for sure. It simply should outclass the Q10 by quite a bit. The only smartphone I'd consider for a more or less serious vacation as a real compact camera replacement would be the Nokia 808 and Lumia 1020. Maybe the 1520 too. But if you actually care a lot about later use of your photos, I wouldn't really risk just using the Q10 only.

Oh man, I worked in 2012 as a Windows Phone 8 rep and for the duration of that, I had a Lumia 920. Such nice pictures! That's the phone my mom has now.
