I just read that comment made by a member embedded in the 'I dropped my porsche design phone' thread in the z10 forum.

So, is this true? Does the playbook charger burn out z10's and all other devices?

Sounds incorrect to me. I've used it to charge a whole bunch of stuff from my daughter's kobo to my stuff with no issues.

Not in my experience. I've used it on my 9900 for a quick charge when I was strapped for time, my PB (of course,) my Z10 when strapped for time, and even my HP Touchpad... all for quite some time now, and have noticed no ill effects. Whenever possible I use the 'proper' charger for each device, but I haven't noticed any destruction as of yet.

Great. That's what I think as well.

I've been using it since 9900 and non issues.

Guess the poster there was trying to stir up a rumor.

Anyone who has raced RC cars, or dabbled in high-end custom flashlights and the like know that low and slow is the way. Trickle charging keep temps down. Heat reduces longevity, to what extent is debatable but can be determined.

I've seen many threads on this subject since the PlayBook came out, with the results split down the middle. I just wonder has anybody tried contacting blackberry to can an official answer.

The battery will wear out over time, that is a given. Considering a replacement battery can be had for $20-30 online...I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's not like we have an Apple product with a sealed back.

Batteries wear out due to heat, and charging at a higher current can increase heat generation during charging. But relative to the amount of cycles your battery (or phone for that matter) will be used for, it really doesn't matter if you use the PlayBook charger instead of the oem one.

I know it fried my 9900 battery
Fact verified from BlackBerry well almost. They couldn't figure it out so they blamed the playbook charger. I don't use it for anything other than the playbook. Almost charged z30 on by accident.

Perhaps somebody can confirm this, but I am pretty sure BlackBerry sells the identical playbook charger for the Z10 and calls it a "premium charger".

So I would say BB approves of using this.

The charging circuit in the phone should be designed to protect your hardware from attempting to overcharge the battery. Using the playbook charger just increases the current supplied to your device, so it charges faster. In the short run it will generate slightly more heat with 0 effect, and in the long run you will reduce the overall number of charging cycles before the battery begins to deteriorate and not hold charge.

As people have mentioned a new battery is pretty cheap and the amount of times you will have to charge it before it starts degrading will be a LOT, so its absolutely nothing to be worried about.

On that note, is it difficult to change the battery in the z30?

I'd also like to know whether it's possible to switch out the z30 battery if it ever dies. Is it soldered on? Hopefully somebody will post a z30 tear down video on YouTube some day.

Oh and we have 3 playbooks in my household and are a hardcore BlackBerry family. The PB chargers are all we use to charge the Bb10 devices and we've experienced no noticeable ill effects so far.
