Samsung S4 catches fire while charging and then tries to silence user after proof of the issue and it doesn't go over well.

hmm.. It could be due to a user error. (such as water being in the charging port) This is the first time I'm hearing about such an incident.
Edit: To clarify, I am talking about the s4, not smartphones in general.

There have been iPhones that have blown up and killed people before. It's not the only time something similar has happened.

Well yeah, I knew about apple devices catching fire. I was talking specifically about the s4. What I'm saying is, since this is the first time we are hearing about a s4 catching fire, chances are it was due to a user error.

    Any device can fail.
The article points to allegedly Samsung's dirty tactics of attempting to hide the occurrence.

BlackBerry exploded once too (link) and the company said they took it seriously.

No Having a water in the charging port is. It could be so many other things of course. Just giving you an example.

However like vrud said, they shouldn't have asked the person to take down the video. (which usually never ends well for the company)

There is video proof through the link in the article including a pdf file of the liability waiver they wanted him to sign.

And y'all are shocked that Sammy would try to avoid liability?

Myopia is what big corporations develop when they become, well, too big. Instead of getting ahead of this and taking care the customer, they allegedly try subterfuge.

    Stupid, IMHO, but typical.

If you look at all platforms, none of them are perfect. No matter how good a smartphone device brand is, there will always be a few lemons.

Samsung should have just owned up to the issue and not tried to hide it. It's bad PR for them when they are caught trying to silence a person after his phone caught fire.

I think Samsung's PR tactics are the issue, rather than the faulty phone.

Guys the issue is with the letter Samsung sent the guy, not the phone exploding.

The issue is with Samsung PR/Legal team.

This worries companies as they see what happened to Tesla with that video of their electric car burning. It sent their stock plummeting...a tough time for such a fledgling company. Gas cars burn as well, but no one freaks out about ( see Ford Pinto for historical perspective...hint it was a design decision not to reduce the risk of fire due to costs).

It's worth pointing out that this particular case was due to a defective third party charger.
