BlackBerry have sponsored Mercedes F1 for quite a while, certainly all of this season. The last couple of races has seen BBM logos in place of the BlackBerry logo.

It would have made more sense to do a tie in with Mercedes-Benz rather than Porsche Design.

Mercedes Benz has a higher profile especially in business (larger*).

Formula 1 would have been a great place to launch the new device, with a big event like Red Bull have done in the past for films.

The new device might be targeted at rich people in Dubai but Formula 1 is huge in the upper echelons of the middle east and a launch of the device on race day by the Mercedes team would have been a bigger spectacle.

The problem with that is that kind of plan would be rather costly for blackberry. Not just for the promotional event but also the production of the devices(aesthetic architecture) would be higher than what they normally produce. Also with the attitude towards blackberry in the media and consumer world there's no guarantee they would sell well.

It would be less costly if Mercedes Benz road division covered some of the cost with the potential for special BlackBerry gadgets in their cars.

Did Porsche Design pay for everything or not?

The marketing would be expensive only because of the guaranteed exposure. I know that does not guarantee sales but if you had that attitude to business you wouldn't do any marketing and you end up... like BlackBerry.

Well from what I see from their line up of products, it does look like Porsche Design makes the device themselves. I guess they have this deal with Blackberry to use the OS and build the hardware similar to the Z10. The exterior would be where they work their magic.
