Here's a guide on how to simply zip and unzip files on your BB10 device. The idea for this guide came from one of our forum members, Mel25 so thanks to him for the suggestion!

All you need to UNZIP files is your File Manager.
So in File Manager I have a zipped file called Work Files like this:

Now you must tap the file you want to open and you will see this:

Simply tap the UNZIP icon (which looks like an opened zipper) and then you are going to have to choose a location TO WHERE you want the files unzipped.

Navigate to the folder where you want to unzip those file like this:

After you tap unzip, your files will unzip in a folder in your chosen location.

When you tap the folder, you will see your items unzipped and ready to use.

I circled Work Files at the top to show you that it is no longer a PREVIEW. These files are unzipped and ready to be used or read.

Now to zip up files using File Manager:
OK here we have some instructor PowerPoints we are going to zip up. Notice the overflow buttons at the bottom. You will need to tap that first.

So after you choose Select, you can choose the items you want to zip by tapping, like this:

Once you have selected your files to zip, tap the ZIP icon like below:

Here is the ZIPPING process as it works.

Notice the files are zipped right where they were. Here is what it looks like when zipped.

    There you have it!!!
No need for a third party app to zip and unzip! Your BB10 device can do it all!

Great guide excellent detailed write up.

Please include you can unzip rar files.

That's one of the biggest gripes people have.

They don't realize you can dl albums straight from any site then unzip them.

Not saying cb is promoting piracy.

I download a ton of free mixtapes and EP's.

Or to send a bunch of pictures, for instance. Rather than attaching a bunch of pictures to an email, you simply zip all the picture you want to send, attached said zip file to your email & hit "send."

I believe they call this "efficiency."

    I'm z10ing. Yes, I invented a verb.

    Quick question

If I zip a file and email it to someone, can they unzip it on their end on their PC using any of the widely used unzip programs?

Yes, I've emailed a .zip to a friend which I created on my phone. They used whatever they had locally to unzip it - no complaints.

What about to someone on a non - blackberry phone??... i.e... you took several pics of someone and instead of sending them one by one you send them as a zipped file. How would it appear on their phone? Will it show up as an "unsupported file"?

If they have a smartphone running Android, iOS, or Windows, they will see it as a .zip file and can open it with their phone's OS's native zip app.

If they have an older flip phone or other non-smartphone, then you may have to email the file to them so they can open it on a real computer. Their phone would probably throw an error or perhaps do nothing, if they tried to open it directly.

Interesting, since I've seen in other threads that one of the cool things about having a blackberry was being able to zip and unzip files making it seem like other smartphones can't do that but you're saying they can.

Well, I think they can. I've received zip files from friends who sent them from non-BB phones. Whether or not they zipped them on the phone, I'm not sure. But I know they can view the contents. Next time it happens I'll be sure to ask for details.
