There are tons of those things out there, and I don't know if the model I am about to mention is easily available in the UK, but I have been very happy with this one:

    JLab Audio - Bouncer

It has a very nice sound, remote control, ability to function as a telephone speakerphone, a wired audio input and a high-powered USB port on the back you can use to charge USB-based devices.

What it does not have is an iPhone dock or the ability to use batteries. It is AC/mains-powered only.

It might depend on whether you want to be portable or not. The BB Music Gateway can be plugged into an existing audio system and connect to both the Playbook and the Z10 - I use it with my system for both music and when I use the html output for video.

I have the Bose Sound link min speaker. It works great. Sounds really nice. It's a bit pricey but it doesn?t hurt to check it out.

I personally have the sony ball like bluetooth speaker. Think pokeball in size and packs a pretty wallop in terms of loudness. It goes on sale quite frequently for 59.99 (cnd) and like i thought, the ball like design makes carrying it less awkward. It also has NFC pairing capabilities that make it extra neat! Link below.

I've wowed plenty of people with that speaker as well, I would say it's almost just as loud as the Sony ones. For $20 you really can't lose. Both of these portable speakers double up a speakerphone. Both these speakers can fill a room easy.

    just some cheaper alternatives

Personally I prefer to carry the Sony one around because it's easier to carry around.

I use the jbl. Maybe not "the best," but good value, works really well.
