So there are some people saying that windows phone 8 might be licensed out to oems for free in particular to htc. While I'm rooting for blackberry 10 to succeed this would be terrible news even if they decide to exit the hardware market and focus on software, it's bad. They might have to give it out for free if they want other manufacturers to use the OS. What do you guys think about this. The competition in the Mobile landscape is CRAZY!!!

Even if BlackBerry exits hardware and focus on software and services... that doesn't mean that BB10 will be popping up anywhere. It wasn't the hardware that failed, it was the ecosystem that the software needed to complete it. They only place you might see an HTC device using BB10 is in high security devices that BlackBerry may contract to have built for them.

From what I'Ve heard, Microsofts traditional hardware partners aren't amused by Microsoft's plans to develop and release their own devices, be it tablets or phones. So this could be a (needed?) sign Microsoft still cares about their partners and doesn't want to get them off the boat. It could also be interesting for the whole plattform: If you take a look at Windows Phone hardware sales, Nokias Lumia series had roughly 2/3, if not more marketshare of all sold WP devices. Getting rid of the licensing fee might give other companies a smaller reason to keep releasing Windows Phone products.

to keep all it's OEMs together. Plus they WILL make $40 per handset sold when they buy Nokia hardware. That's a lot especially since Nokia dominates the WP market like 90% market. Microsoft is doing this is because to help/save HTC. by giving WP for free and letting them run phones running Android and WP which saves money. it's like this give WP for free to OEMs. MS will make $40 per handset sold with 90% of WP market from future Lumia phones. plus the patents from Android devices. might as well give WP for free. therefore more OEMs join cause OEMs like the word "free"

If they do this for all oems they would grow very fast their market share. Having all oems marketing wp8 and it being in people's face they would grab market share by grabbing new smartphone users.

Windows Phone is actually used by quite some OEMs for a while. In the beginning, even Dell was offering a Windows Phone device (IMO the best WP based QWERTY to date). Samsung, LG and HTC were launch partners for the whole plattform. With WP8, HTC and Samsung were still around and I think there are one or two asian brands (Huawei/ZTE and another one) who are still supporting the plattform. But besides Nokia, HTC was the only brand which basicly mattered. Surprisingly Samsung never had great success with Windows Phone 8, even though their Ativ S device is basicly a Galaxy S3 running WP8 and with (software related) different hardware.

Huawei sold 1 million Ascend W1's and Samsung also sold 1 million Samsung Ativ S's with no advertising. that's an achievement. It's because of Brand image

Windows Phone would be cheaper than Android. In the low end the price advantage could be a game changer.

well the high end is saturated now. Android had a head start there in the low end market. But Windows phone is gonna charge in quickly cause a low end WP offers more value than a low end android.

This is true but it was always costing them to license the OS. If they remove that they might push it a lot more. The money spent on paying Microsoft could go into marketing the phones.

I am amazed anyone things licensing out BB10 was a serious option anyways! Um....maybe a a few small parties? Or, if cheap enough a major manufacturer who wants to keep give Google a slight slap....the major manufacturer wouldn't push it though....just have an obscure model running it....the Samsung Deville....or the HTC Burificator, or the Huwei Wuhei.

Ms is simply trying to get people to try windows phone. It allows folks to to give windows phone a try without ending up stuck with it if they don't like it.

Imagine iPhone that dual boots BlackBerry10. BlackBerry would finally get the BlackBerry 10 experience in tens of millions of hands like Heins predicted.

This is smart on MS part Imo.

It is pretty smart if a they do end up doing this. I'm gonna try one of these phones out. Only if blackberry is completely done though. This will be my second choice.
