If you are on 4GLTE, that icon will say 4GLTE. It's that simple as far as I've seen on mine.
Also make sure it is turned on in settings.

Anyone know the difference 4gLTE and 4glte (in lowercase)?

I believe most carrier builds will actually say 4G LTE at the top.

As a side note, what I WISH would happen is carriers would abandon this "HSPA+ with enhanced back haul is 4G" marketing notion because it freakin' isn't. The "G" terns were intended to be umbrella, technical terms which encompass multiple protocols and improvements. For example, GPRS introduced data packets for 2G and EDGE improved GPRS, but it was all still 2G.

I wish it would say just 3G for HSPA or HSPA+ either way, and reserve 4G for LTE, tho even LTE didn't meet original standards/goals set for 4G. LTE Max is really where the true 4G comes in.

Lowercase is BlackBerry language for connection is available but device not utilizing it either due to temporary issue or because user turned data off.

    That's a new one. Haven't seen that.
You actually get both on the same carrier?

I'm on T-Mobile. Up until about a week ago, mine said "4G " only. Then it said "4G LTE" Internet was noticeably faster. Yesterday, it went back to just "4G" and the Internet went back to its normal speed.

Seems as though you should have a drop down menu where you have the option to switch back and forth, like so.

Maybe that means at the moment you're on AT&T's HSPA network, as in T-Mobile when I get HSPA the signal shown as '4G', and when I'm on their LTE network it shows '4GLTE'

So I contacted AT&T and not only did they have me on 3G a few months ago, but when they put me on the "right" plan, it was not LTE like it was supposed to be. So they say it shoud be resolved by Tuesday evening, but the tech was not expecting compensation for my lack of services received to be given. We'll see about that...

This is how it will appear. Also if you check your download speeds using the speed net app, you'll get fast times like 20mb/s downloads.

I'm also on AT&T and my phone is unlocked. 100-1 (the AT&T version, but I bought in Toronto).

They said I'd have LTE on launch day which is today and I'm still stuck on 4G non LTE. What gives?!

The STL100-1 is the non-LTE device, IIRC. As in it is not capable of LTE.
