I think modding was pretty popular in the good old Bold 9000 days, so I thought now that parts started to become available for the Q10 it is time to get modding back to BlackBerry ;-)

I haven't seen a thread here in the Q10 section yet, but over in the 'BlackBerry 10 Dev Devices' section developers are modding their Dev Alpha C devices into real Q10s (this is what I did, too). I thought this would be a good start. http://forums.crackberry.com/blackbe...ousing-802003/

Internally the Dev Alpha C and Q10 are the same, so all the instructions there apply to the Q10 as well.

Here my modded Q10 'Old-School' with a silver bezel.

I prefer to not alter the black steel bezel as I like to keep the look of the 9900 separate from the new look of the Q10. Just my two cents!

Yup, after the change I sometimes keep searching for the Q10 because I think it is the 9900 on my desk.

50 bucks is a bit much... I love the look though totally want it but I'll have to wait. Were 9900 parts this expensive when first released as well?

    HA!

I am so glad that you proved that this was possible!

After I handled the white Q10 at VZW, after checking out the black one of course, I began wondering if it would be possible to swap bezels - lo and behold! there is the proof I need.

    that is ******* sa-aa-weet!

Though I am getting the black Q10 and plan to do this mod, I bet the white Q10 would look killer with a black bezel!

How long did the install take you, and did you have to take the entire phone apart (as per the video) aka remove the main board etc... or is it just a matter of removing a few screws and it drops into place?

Check the link to the other forum thread that I posted. There is a video by fbloise that shows how to take apart a Dev Alpha C. Taking apart the Q10 is basically the same.

I am not sure I personally would do this to a phone I had paid $600 for. The problem is there are a couple of places where you have to loosen some stickers, so putting it back together won't get it back into 100% 'factory condition'. On the photo you can see how the sticker under the battery is a little wavy now.

The actual process is not too difficult, it just gets a little scary sometimes when you have all the parts lying around ;-) You have to basically take the whole thing apart to change the bezel, up to separating keypad, LCD, mainboard, back housing etc.

Gotta ask, is the factory black trim on the Q10 actually a metal or is it a plastic? If it's a metal there's a good chance we could take off the black paint using a dremel with a small wire wheel, a decent alternative to tearing the whole thing down and it saves buying a new trim piece.

I second that. I much rather just remove the black as metal is naturally gray
