So for those of you considering an inReach satellite messenger from DeLorme, there is some good news. Thanks to xsacha's tutorial on sideloading using a developer token, Earthmate for Android now runs under BB10.

DeLorme Earthmate for InReach works! Almost....-delorme-z10-small.jpg

The bad news is that under 2.3.3, the Bluetooth API is not included, thus the inReach does not communicate with the phone. It will pair, but there are not the required services enabled.

The good news is that the 4.2.2 player should include Bluetooth support, so hopefully we'll get full functionality when BB10.2 is released.

Also note the following: Sideloading using a developer token is complex and produces only a single .bar file, usefull only on a single phone. See Tutorial: Run ANY Android 2.3.3 app on Blackberry10 for details.

You can test if it works right now by running the 10.2.0.341 beta OS.

Yea, I just don't feel like going through all that with my Z10. Maybe when I have a long weekend to endlessly reload OS's. Any volunteers?

Edit: By the way, has anyone confirmed the existence of the Android Bluetooth API with 10.2.0.341?

So I went ahead an loaded the dev version of 10.2 onto my z10 and tested the app. It still works as before, although it certainly seems much snappier, but the Bluetooth support is still not there. My understanding is that Blackberry will continue to roll out API's for the Android player and hopefully Bluetooth will be in there.

The is also another issue. It appears that the inReach uses a Bluetooth service that is not supported in BB10 at the moment. In both 10.1 and 10.2 Beta, it pairs, but there are no services associated with the device. So what we could be looking at here is a more fundamental problem than the Android API's.

Lets hope N8 (10.2 Gold) brings some more goodies...

Edit: After pairing it with a PC, the inReach definitely uses SPP. SPP is implemented in BB10, so it may just be an Android player thing. I'm continuing to look...

Still no luck with 10.2.0.1047. Bluetooth support is still not fully implemented in the Android player. Until SPP is invoked, apps like this will not be fully functional.

I hope more progress is made with this app. My search and rescue team is going to start using these, and I want to be able to use them with my z10.

Hopefully someone or something moves forward on this. I and three of my backcountry skiing buddies are all likely to toss our Z10s/Q10s and pick up adroid or apple phones just so we can be safer in the backcountry this skiing season.

Anyone had a chance to check this app out on 10.2 yet? I confess I'm apparently not adept enough to make it work.

So we have success with 10.2.1.1055!

I can confirm that you can download Earthmate from your favorite app store, install it, and pair with the inReach.

    Earthmate is now fully functional!

I'm the other BlackBerry user on the Delorme forum. Obviously this is good news. Of course that crappy Android phone I bought just for the Inreach is probably now totally worthless, being stuck on Android 2.3.

Ahhh, but I need the leaked version 10.2.1.1055 - I'm only running 10.2.0.429. Any word on when 10.2.1 will be distributed?

Hi! I am another user of InReach. Is the app working to your satisfaction so far? I am about to buy a BB-Z10 (or Z30). Hopefully, I will be able to ditch the refurbished I Pod I bought just to use with my Delorme InReach.

Just a FYI, I am using the standard (as opposed to any leaks) 10.2.1.2156 from T-mobile. The Earthmate app works perfectly. My comments on are the Delorme forum:
Update: Earthmate runs under BlackBerry OS10! - Android App - DeLorme Community Forums

I think anyone can read the Delorme forum, but it not, I will copy and paste to Crackberry.

May I gave a high five to the coders at Blackberry. Job well done.

Moderator: Can you change the title to "DeLorme Earthmate for InReach works!" and drop the "almost".

I'm going to keep the junky Android phone I bought for use with the InReach "just in case". Worse comes to worse, if you break your Z10/Z30, you still have a way to get messages out with the InReach. At this point, the money has been spent and in my case, how much is an old HTC G2 worth?

Incidentally, I had no idea how terrible a non-Blackberry keyboard can be until I got the G2.

I've downloaded EarthMate, and have paired my Q10 with my inreach Delorme SE, but I get an error message when I try to connect: "Cannot connect with inReach...".

I can connect with my Nexus 7 with no difficulty, so it's not a bluetooth problem.

    Any suggestions, please?

    Thanks,
    Art
