So how well does the HDR camera work with the 10.1 update? Us Americans are anxious to find out since we haven't gotten the update yet. : /

    High Dynamic Range.
It takes images at different exposures and then merges them into one. Making bright and dim areas of a picture even.

Its pretty good IMO. Normal first, HDR second.

Couldn't get a brighter sky for better comparison because it's early in the morning in here.

It's a poor implementation from my experience, but it's better than nothing. They need to work on their combining algorithms. It looks like they're using a super basic "average colour" approach.

I think it's amazing. I know it's nothing new as far as smart phone features go but I'm glad BlackBerry is improving the phone in small ways like this as updates roll out.

VZW with 10.1 here and the HDR works great. I compared it with a Iphone and the Z10 does a better job. For what I see, it lightens shadows pretty much. I took a picture of a room with no lights with just the light on in my room and the Z10 did a great job of getting rid of all the shadows on the floor from the light of my room. It pretty much evens out the lighter and darker areas to a level field.

That's one of the problems I have with the HDR mode. The purpose of HDR isn't to abolish all shadows...it's to more closely resemble what the human eye sees. Pretty sure humans see shadows. It also absolutely destroys the colour in the image.

The back/main camera for HDR is pretty good, but for me, front-facing HDR is terrible, everything gets fuzzy. Anyone else have this problem? I'll post pictures later.

The HDR is suited for pics that have high dynamic ranges, like if you're taking a picture of someone under the shade of a tree, with the sunlight shining bright all around.

That's my understanding at least, and during those times, I definitely see an improvement with HDR.

I have better pictures of the ones below, but they have family members in it, so I won't be posting them online. They're quite good though.

More visible detail in the HDR version - but to each his own.

It doesn't really delete the shadows and darkness. I think it reproduces what the eye sees or at least make it closer. Non hdr pics are much darker than the real thing with heavier shadowing now that I compare the two. I'm very happy with the z10 hdr feature so far. I never cared for it on the 4s but I love it on the z10.

Depends on your preference. I could use each pic for diff purposes. Personally I like the hdr one more.

I was only responding to what you said.
Strange that you prefer the cartoony look of the Z10s HDR over the 4S. But, to each their own. I think the HDR makes for terribly unrealistic photos. Just look at some of the various shots around Crackberry with sky in them. It looks like something out of Bugs Bunny

I love the HDR feature on my Z10 so far. Yes, some parts get a bit grainy, but you should realize, that normally that parts would have been just dark. Mobile cameras don't have a proper aperture and can't really change exposure time as hand-held picture would be all blurry, the only thing it changes is ISO, aka sensitivity. The HDR feature basically makes two shots -one with lower ISO to catch a perfect sky and second with higher ISO to make the shades brighter and depending on light conditions the picture can get grainy because with higher sensitivity comes higher signal distortion

P.S.: Here's a picture a took today with HDR on. Coming from Bold 9900 that didn't even have autofocus I'm pretty impressed with a camera on my Z10.

That's true but that doesn't make it a better photo unless you want an exact copy of what your eyes can see.

    Loved your explanation, thank you.

I was very unhappy with the camera on the 9900, so I was very nervous about the pictures on the Z10. I must say, I really love what BlackBerry did with the Z10 camera. Much much better.

If you want to access and shoot HDR, open the settings in camera. The three dots not the downs wipe bezel. Press the normal shot mode, switch that. I know it took me a while to find it. You can save a HDR and standard shot too, it's in the down bezel swipe settings.
