Seems like a strong arm tactic by the DOD in BBRYs favour, but it might just be that iOS is simply not good enough without severe modifications to functionality. IMO, just approving BES10 was a win for BlackBerry. Interesting news.

Well, duh, I mean, nobody actually thought the DoD would be cool with sending everybody's data back to the Apple mothership, did they? That functionality is core to iOS.

I'm sure Samsung and Apple are devastated that stock devices are not being used. What a setback.

Dunno. Apple has been frozen out of FIPS for a very long time. I don't think money or favoritism gets you in. Now, I'm not too sure Apple really focused on getting certified, but I truly believe the certification is above board.

Favoritism? Watch the Clip below. And remember these are senators who are questioning Apple about potential tax avoiding....only to later ask them what they think the rules should be haha. Funny clip.

Hilarious! One of my favorite Stewart clips ever. Don't get me started on that...

But, to be fair, getting FIPS certification is a black and white affair. I highly doubt a rigged process would have allowed Samsung and Moto to get it before Apple.

Haha true and I don't know a whole lot about this stuff but isn't really Google and android getting that approval since it's their platform?

No, I believe that the OEMs get it on the kernels themselves. I don't know if stock Android could even be certified.

That "hearing" was an embarrassment. It was a corporate date.

Ahh I wasn't aware of that. And yes the hearing was just a free lobby session for Apple lol.

Remember that FIPS 140-2 approval only certifies the cryptographic module, which in a smartphone environment is one software module amongst thousands making up the OS. It says nothing about the other capabilities of the device, and it does not make the whole device "secure" in a practical implementation. With 140-2 one of many required tests has been passed, without 140-2 a device (more strictly its software) can never be accepted regardless how strong the pressure. There is no provision in law to allow a waiver to the FIPS requirement.

The sad reality is this marketing ship has sailed, with all the doom and gloom articles a few weeks ago when it was announced IOS would meet DOD standards. The stock still lost value and prospective buyers still felt uneasy about considering buying a Z10. This was carried by how many blogs that also ran the original story ? Probably none.

So all was right with the screwy corrupt world of mobile investing.

How is this different from BES in the most secure agencies???

No Safari browser (you have to use a containerized browser that will have far fewer features)
In strict enviroments, BES can disable anything except specialised sites.
    No iMessage
BBM is disabled in the most secure agencies
    No iTunes
iTunes or the ability to download any media to the device is also disabled through BES
No App Store (as in only apps the DoD allows on your device through their own App Store)
No BlackBerry world in secure BES environments
    Containerized segregated email client
    Closed email through BES
No Wi-Fi access on DoD Wi-Fi networks though you can use it at home or publicly
WiFi disabled through BES in secure environments
Must be connected to a MDM (Mobile Device Management) solution
BlackBerries must be connected through BES.

Every single restriction is also applicable to BlackBerries.

No difference whatsoever in the restrictions between an iOS device and a BlackBerry in the most secure areas of DoD.

Manager - Can you get on your phone and search for the address of my next appointment please?
Assistant - Ummm... no, I can't use my browser.
Manager - Oh... OK I'll do that. Can you access the server and send the contract to my next appointment please?
Assistant - Um... geez they won't let my iPhone on the wifi so... um...
Manager - FFS! OK, I'll do that too. Geez... Can you play me a tune? I need me some Green Day right about now...
Assistant - Erm... they won't let me use iTunes either boss...

Manager - You know... you really put the A$$ in assistant. Why did you pick that POS thing anyway?
    Assistant - Cuz it's Purdy?
    Manager - You are fired...

Director: Get admin here to discuss the conference coordination.
Manager: I fired him because he couldn't use the browser, the wifi, or play Green Day for me on his toy iPhone.
Director: You fired him because of that? Don't you realize you can't do any of those things on your Blackberry either because of BES restrictions? And by the way, the custom financial tracking data app that we created only runs for iOS so now we can't track our financials for last year?
    Manager: uh....ah....I.....
Director: This is verbal notice that we are launching an investigation into the illegally firing of the admin staff and your continued Below Expectations reviews. A formal notice will be drafted. It will instruct you on the process. Find an attorney. Clear your desk you are on administraive leave pending the investigation.

    Manager walks away.

    Director gets on the phone:

Director: Sally, find me our assistant's phone number and Human Resources.
