Now, I wanted to get your opinion on this. This is a debate that I am having at home and wanted some of my fellow CB-Members to chime in. One of the main reason for wanting to get my daughter a phone is in the link to the bottom of this post (my daughter's teacher see link below), preferably Z10 due to the fact I want it to be a long term commitment. I am not rich but I can afford to get my daughter a phone with a fairly reasonable plan. Parental Control will be enabled (No FB, Internet, social media, just phone and text).
We live in a strange world and we have to protect our young one. Please provide me your feedback/thoughts...

So you think the phone will help reduce an incident like this from occurring? I'm not sure about that.

I'd get her a non smartphone.it would be free with a an and cheap to replace when she loses or breaks it. Which she will, she's 8.

Also, I doubt any 8 year old would have the awareness to grab their phone while being molested.

Yes. Just get one of those cheap kid phones. Unless you have money to throw away.

Giving a child a phone won't help with that scenario, sorry.

In my opinion, 13-14 is the youngest age.

Get her something cheap and non-touchscreen. A physical keyboard would help her I think because then she could see the numbers to dial. Something like the 9700 or 9650 would be fine.

No, I do not think that this will reduce incidents like this from happening, but providing the tools to contact the parents after an incident so we can take immediate action is I'm hoping / looking for...

Ugh. Sucks that any parent has to even consider this issue! Think a z might be overkill for what you need but how can you put a price on a child's safety.

I bought my grandad a phone from Rogers. Nice easy flip phone with large buttons. Best part is that it's durable and has a button on the outside of it.

Press and hold that button and it calls three numbers in sequence until answered. Nice and easy. Pre paid plan.

I get what you are saying but as I mentioned, I'm looking for a long term commitment and she is very knowledgeable on the PlayBook as well as the Z10. Losing it is part of getting her ready for responsibility... talking with her as well as setting ground rules for keeping her phone safe.

I wouldnt say an 8 year old is too young to have a phone... I agree with a number of posts above, a Z10 might be a bit to much at this point! if you were to go with the Z10, I would deficately get the most durable case you possibly could, My kids have all had phones since about 7... and all have broken, or lost their phones. Now all are 11 to 16 and seem to take better care

Why can't she get her kid a z10?
There's 5 year Olds running around with Iphones and I pads, atleast she can restrict its use and put some cartoons and kid games on there. Just get a very sturdy case

    Z10? Why yes it is.

Why does it have to he a smartphone? This makes sense. I did not watch the video but I think this is overkill. I know with Verizon there basic phones come with parental controls and child locator.

I truly don't care what you buy your child, I just think that you could be wiser with your money when deciding on what phone to get your 8 year old.
