I my case, it goes back to the black out in 2003, phone calls, text messages, emails were not working during the blackout, however I was able to communicate with family via PIN

Because us long time blackberry users been using pin to pin before the BBM fan boys ever heard of blackberry!

Pin to pin is great for businesses to use as IM. Pin to Pin you can communicate Instantaneously with out having to wait for the person to accept you as a contact.
