hello guys, first of all, loving my z10, im with tmobile usa but currently in Switzerland for work, i keep getting text messages that my roaming charges are exceeding $50, $100, $200 and then $500 dollars... i dont know what the heck is going onnn, obviously im not browsing, and ive turned off all the application permissions to not allow any background processes to run (at least thats what im assuming it does). So....
    1) does any body know how to limit the phone data to BIS data (i have the international blackberry email plan) so i know bbm and email are not causing the roaming charges. Any applications to do this?

    2) do bbm voice and video chat go through regular data? or are those covered under BIS, just curious!!!

    any help is greatly appreciated!

    thank you in advaced!

Turn off you wireless and go straight wifi, or get yourself a local sim for while you are there. Also on the Z10, you are not using BIS.

nop in tmobile usa the "blackberry international email" plan covers email/bbm usage, basically anything that goes through BIS (i used to use shazam on bis setting all the time while traveling overseas never got charged a penny!!!)

I am in Europe quite frequently and just the slightest error on your settings with that International Plan will run up hundreds of dollars in charges, it happened to me a couple years ago. Your best bet now is always to get an XCom Global mifi and pay $15 per day for unlimited 3G data and it will support up to 5 separate devices at a time. It might seem a lot until you find out a hotel charges 15 - 20 Euros per day for Internet.

BIS plan or not, none of the Z10 data, including emails and BBM go through BIS
So your segmented BIS data plan isn't doing anything for you. Everything you do while international roaming will be charged as international data usage.

Turn data off and go straight wifi. Best option.

Also getting a local sim is another good idea.

Adding an international data option to your plan.

BBM on the Z10 uses data, any prepaid data will work.

Click on mobile network in settings and ensure data service while roaming is set to prompt. Use wifi if possible and/or get a roaming data plan from your carrier.

Once you will have the data plan on the local prepaid, you should get the access to all services, as in Z10 it is handled quite different way then in OS <10

Did you ask T-Mobile what their rates were in Switzerland before going? You need to always double and tripple check with your carriers people before traveling. I know that Switzerland has a different system of how they bill for their cell service that the Canadian carriers have Switzerland added to their lock list. Meaning that data won't work at all if you take a Bell, Telus, or Rogers devices over there.

The best way to avoid these kind of things is to unlock your phone, and buy a SIM from a local carrier, most countries have a pay as you go plan and by some time. Email those who need to get a hold of you your temp phone number.

Bbm still goes trough the NOC but not trough unlimited bis data plans, everything comes out of one data chunk.

Bis has always been like this for me on Vodafone uk so not a problem for me but I understand the shock for others.

what the others said - treat your data habits as if you're using an iphone or android.

When traveling, unlock your phone and buy a prepaid SIM in that country, or if you aren't staying long enough for a prepaid SIM to be worthwhile, use public wifi. All modern phones turn off data access by default when roaming - don't ever touch that setting unless you want a huge bill!

And yes, you don't need to be actively browsing websites to eat up data. Notifications do a fine job of that, and a lot of apps do polling every once in a while.

They can't limit bbm anymore. The z10 doesn't use BIS it only uses data. As long as you have data everything will work.

I just had the same issue and after speaking to 8 service reps I finally was told by a BB10 specialist at T-Mobile that the Z10 dos not support the international roaming plan. They waved the charges because they admitted that they should have told me that the phone was not compatible with the service.
A collegue of mine claims for he might have found an solution.
Unless he has, this baby is going right back to the store.

You do not need to get a BlackBerry SIM or a BBM specific SIM. You just need a SIM that any roaming Android or iOS user would buy that has a chunk of data to use. Your going to have a nasty bill waiting for you.

How does gps get handled? I'm traveling overseas and want to use my Z10 just for camera and public wifi. I don't plan on calling or using data outside of hotspots...so I'm even going to remove my Verizon sim and turn off mobile network and data.

Anything else I should do to avoid huge fees?

I travel a lot for my work and have always used the $20 per month international unlimited email feature on my BB. I was about to upgrade to a Z10, and was in fact told by my local T-Mobile store that this feature continues to be available on the Z10. However, when I called T-Mobile to double check, they told me that in fact this feature is no longer available for personal email accounts like gmail on the Z10, although you can still use it on the older BB models. I believe that this policy change will hurt both T-Mobile and Blackberry as many of us may now switch carriers and will certainly consider BBs competitors like Apple and Samsung, whose devices often get better ratings. T-Mobile really needs to be clearer about this policy change, given both the large financial implications for its customers and the significant amount of confusion among T-Mobile sales staff.

With the old BlackBerry phones using local SIM cards was a pain and BIS made it worse. I read many complaints about this on these forums as some people who travel prefer to use local SIM cards and get full data. With an unlocked Z10, you can now do this and still get all your email and BBM. Unfortunately many carriers were in US were killing off off International BlackBerry plans.

Also since the competition all functions this way, and I find the Z10 experience superior to the experience offered by iOS and Android, the Z10 is still the best option for me, especially since I'll be able to still contact my family with BBM text, voice and Video now.
