So, today my phone as about 88% battery, charging and I look a few minutes later it was dead. It was being charged from my mac. I tried pressing the power button, tried to pull the battery but nothing worked, it was completely dead. Then, I plugged it in to the wall charger, no response for a few minutes and then I held the power button down, the red light started to flash, turned to solid red for 20 seconds, then dead again. Then, I pressing the power button again, no response but then tried a couple more time, it booted up. Anyone know why? :S

sounds like your Z10 was getting a trickle charge from the Mac USB...it's a problem that the PlayBook has, where the USB isn't strong enough to charge. So it just died on its own, and when you plugged into a wall charger, it (eventually) got juiced up. I'd recommend wall-charging all the time, even though it may be a pain/hassle to find a plug.

But the battery was charged to 88%, so why would it die?

The 'gauge' may have been confused due to the trickle charging of the mac. (ie. you may not have really had 88%). I have had this happen when I use underpowered chargers.

Use the Blackberry charger, get it up to 100%, then drain it completely (below 10%) before charging again. Rinse and repeat several times. This will recalibrate your gauge.

The current was simply not strong enough to hold charge from your mac to your z10 that is why

Exactly what everyone else just said.

To add, you may now have an uncalibrated battery indicator on your phone. To fix this, charge the phone with a wall charger until it stops charging (usually 95%+) [Don't take it off the charger at all until it's charged!], and use it until it goes to 10% battery left or less without plugging it in, charge it back up to full without unplugging it, and it should be calibrated again.

Would you not recommend charging from a usb 2.0 port for any laptop (Not just MACs) ?

Phones are usually charged with the USB port. But: USB on computers is limited to 500mA and an external charger usually provides 1000mA or 1500mA or even 2000mA. This is why Blackberry recommends charging the phone with the supplied charger (1500mA I think). You can charge it with the computer USB but it will take longer to charge and depending on the phone it might not charge at all.

What OP describes is a defective handset. No matter how much current the computer can provide (no matter if it is 100mAh or one million mA) it cannot lead to the described behaviour. A device randomly dying while being connected to the computer is a sign for a defective handset.

    Supplied charger is 750ma

Could be only a battery. Where I have had problems with USB charging is when sleep kicks in - I keep the music rocking and there is no problem
