Is there some sort of sleep mode for the GPS antenna? I get inconsistent availability of a gps signal in my apps under similar conditions. Seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

GPS on the Playbook is not very good and very inconsistent. It's not the same GPS as we find on our phones and sat navs. If you search the forums you will find an in depth discussion on the matter.

As for me, I don't use it. It's pointless.

I use the GPS often with the Magellan app. It works very well.
It's not assisted with cell signal like phones so it can take more time. Some apps definitely work better then others.

Maybe it's just me but for not being assisted by a cell tower my PlayBook gps has been getting a pretty quick lock on my location. I just tested it after the latest update from inside my home and got a lock in less than 30 seconds.

OP there is an app named application manager in Blackberry World and it has an option to toggle gps on and off. This doesn't mean it works though as I have never tried it. I use the app to kill Android processes only.
