LOL. It would be interesting to see how long the Z10 would take to boot OS7.1

No. Despite a few (likely temporarily) missing features from the old days, BB10 is FAR superior in EVERY WAY.

Do I want to see the return of a proper bedside mode and a few tweaks which I have no doubt will happen eventually?, sure! But I am loving BB10

Hmm, no not with 7.1, but I'd probably buy a new generation 99xx with BBOS 8 (if there was such a thing) over the current Z10.

I think the OP is getting that if you put a 1.5 GHz dual core processor and 2 GB RAM in a 9810/9900 it wouldn't delay, freeze, etc. - it would fly. Upgrade to 8MP camera and add one to the front, and you would have one heck of a phone. It would have far more functionality, more apps, and be just as speedy. It just wouldn't be "different". I would get one.

Jonty12 come and collect your prize, because I am not all encouraged by the feedback I am seeing on the Z10. I am a playbook and 9900 user and RIM/BBRY promised everything and 2 yrs later nothing (Playbook). I won't be buying into this again, maybe a Z11. Again I ask where are these 1000 popular apps ? Not at all impressed with, it will come. Reviewers are also stating the browser is running slower than S3 and Lumia 920 browsers.

Just something that popped into my head and wanted to gauge some feedback.

Ahhh! Yes I would. As I've stated before, I would have bought the next BB even if the only upgrade was an LTE radio. New OS,...new capabilities are +'s for me!

The problem is that any pre-BB 10 OS is a dead platform--it already was being ignored by major app developers and will continue to be ignored now that BB 10 is out. Sure, maybe the old BB OS could have used some updating, but to me, the problem was never about the interface. Maybe it looks dated with its menus or is confusing with its myriad options, but I'm not wild about the design trend against buttons and the notion that stripping out options makes a device less confusing--it also makes it less useful. I wouldn't mind a Peek-like feature on the old OS, so if could have that as well as solid app support, I'd consider it.

But, supposedly the switch to BB 10 was more about the underlying architecture: the old BB OS supposedly was ill-suited for the needs of today. It was difficult to develop apps for it and tough to optimize for performance (less lag, faster start-up times, etc.). I say supposedly because I've yet to read anything really explaining why this is the case (if anyone is aware of an article or anything explaining, it would be great if you could pass it along!). Yes, some things apparently due to the JVM, but that doesn't really explain why iOS and Android are better suited for today's needs.

Not a chance! I'm getting the Z10 mainly because of the new operating system.

Absolutely not. BBOS was what was keeping the hardware back. Not to mention the quirks we all "loved" - battery pulls, reboots etc

From what I understand, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, you can upgrade the hardware but at some point it doesn't matter because you can't tweak the platform anymore to take advantage of that hardware.

If only they'd made a long-press of the ESCAPE (back) key open the existing Messages app. Then you'd check out the new message you just got. Then click ESCAPE again and you're back to the app you were using again.Tada! A simple to implement "hub" in BBOS. Lots less expensive than a whole new OS, lol.

I know, I know, moot point now...

Are you aware of an article or anything that explains why this is? It's just accepted at face value that BB OS couldn't be updated to address these issues, but I've yet to see any technical explanation about why...
