Okay okay...I'm speculating BUT it kind of make sense.

The Knicks and the Heat are two of the hottest teams in the NBA. Why not use them to reach into the sports market. The cities are huge and very marketable. Also, this could be part of the marketing efforts. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw them in marketing materials.

I'm guessing RIM upper management read the book Tipping Point by fellow Canadian Malcolm Gladwell. To create buzz you need to get the influencers on board. When you see how NBA stars make the fortune of shoe makers, you realize how important it is to get your product seen in the possession of the right people. Is this evidence of the stleath marketing going on at RIM? I hope so.
