In anticipation of BB10, I have a question about using my current Verizon Bold 9930 on the Rogers network (I travel between the US and Canada so I have a phone on each network).

My 9930 is unlocked-will I be able to just put in my Rogers sim card and be good to go? Also, would it help in any way to wipe the phone, and then load the Rogers Bold 9900 software onto it?

Yes, there is a sim card slot on the 9930.

As well, the Rogers Bold 9900 operates on the GSM 850/900/1800/1900 band and the Verizon Bold 9930 is compatible with all of those (specs via phonescoop.com).

From what I remember reading a couple of months ago, yes. You should be able to use the 9930 on Rogers and other comparable carriers. I believe the 9930 was created for the few carriers left that don't support SIM cards, yet the phone itself will support SIM cards. Whether or not you will be able to get H+ to work is a different question. I think its similar to the iPhone dilemma a few years ago, where you could use it on other networks but it would only support EDGE and not 3G. I may be completely wrong and off base with this, but that is what I remember reading somewhere on here.

Yes, the Bold 9930 is a world phone (not sure if it's called a world phone anymore, or if there is a new term), this means it has a CDMA as well as a GSM radio. This means it will work on international GSM cellular networks, and BIS will continue to work as long as the carrier you are on supports it, and you have subscribed to a BIS data package with that carrier. The bands the 9930 supports are these:

Dual-Band: 800/1900 MHz CDMA/EVDO Rev A networks
Quad-Band: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks
Dual-Band: 2100 / 900 MHz UMTS/HSPA networks
HSDPA: 14.4 Mbps
HSUPA: 5.76 Mbps

No, Bold 9930 software is specific to the hardware.

You should research a bit before answering questions. The Verizon 9930, once unlocked, will accept a GSM SIM card, and work as the OP wants it to.

OP, yes you can use an unlocked Verizon 9930 on Rogers. You will only get 2G on it though.

Thanks everyone. I figured that it would, but did not want to mess anything up. Is there anything specifically that I have to do? I.e. Will the phone automatically know to connect to the Rogers network via the sim card, rather than stay connected to the Verizon network (probably Telus once in Canada) and charge me roaming?

Once the phone is unlocked, simply put the SIM card in the phone, and power it on. It should then contact the SIM providers tower, not Verizon. You may have to go in to the Manage Connections and enable GSM/UTS under mobile network. Not sure if it will automatically do this or not.

2G. The 9930 does not have North American UMTS bands. For 3G/HSPA+ on Rogers, you'd want to get a 9900 with the 850 and 1900 MHz bands.
