Do I really need some kind of data plan to get my Gmail email through wi-fi? I can't seem to set up my email account. I am using a prepaid Virgin Mobile talk and text plan with no data package.

But how does Gmail have anything to do with BIS? I can get it on my Playbook without BIS.

You don't need BIS to access internet nor gmail but you do need a data plan to access them. You could always use wifi alternatively.
