I recently bought a 9900 on ebay and it turns out that it has a QWERTZ keyboard and not a QWERTY.

I have had a look around in the forums and on the web and everyone says that it cant be changed with the software so, I was wondering if I could change the keypad and Flex Cable to sort out the problem.

Does anyone know if this will work?

    Hi there,

If you want to switch your 9900 from Qwertz German to Qwerty UK/US.

All you have to do is upgrade to 190, 205 or 437, install English only language (Not German) and change the keyboard to Qwerty for around 20.00 and all works great.

We now have Three 7.1 Qwerty only Software conversion files, 7.1.0.190, 7.1.0.205 and now 7.1.0.437

Who said that changing the keyboard mapping was hard wired and not possible?

Actually just finished up grading to the .437 and thought I would come back to report and saw your message. lol

It worked like a charm and the phone seems to have doubled in speed, the os is really snappy now.

I'm going to go and see if I can buy a new keypad now, not sure about buying bits off ebay anymore.

    Might be a spammer. Lol

But you can't change the housing and expect the Z and Y to be the same when changed, if it's a QWERTY device, it cannot be changed to QWERTZ or vise-versa.

    Wrong!

I confirm that if you use 074, 190, 205 or 437, that the keyboard mapping WILL change Y to Z and 7, will be just like US/UK Qwerty!

Sorry you wasted your money. It won't work, even if you switch housings. Once it's hardcoded, it doesn't change. Software won't change it either. Explained already.

Old thread, but for anyone interested in doing this - yes you can! I've just done it. As my beloved 9900 was drowned in water, I bought crappy but fully working one online. turns out it's from Swiss Telecom with QWERTZ. I only needed the MoBo replaced, which made my phone be as new - qwerty keyboard but qwertz layout though. Wiped the phone using BBSAK and installed .437 with English (UK) only. Voila! the phone is now qwerty.

Can u please help me too?? I am using bold 9790 qwertz and wish to change it to QWERTY. I searched for latest firmware for the device and installed using only English language via app loader. But it is still qwertz. This is my first blackberry.

You cannot change it because it is a physical arrangement assigned on the motherboard. The only way is to buy an NA (north american, ie. Mexican, Canadian, American) BlackBerry bold 9900.

Sorry, not even possible. No language change will do it either, or device software (not called firmware).

Actually it works, I bought a 9900 from germany (qwertz) and successfully "converted" it in qwerty through the tutorial above (changed the keboard too since i had a spare one) . I wiped the smartphone with bbsak and installed .437 with only the english language selected. Worked fine

May your qwerty Bold serves you well!

Since you're in Italy, any recommendations on pay as you go SIM with plenty of 4G data? Just about to go to Milano and Sardinia for 16 days

SE is for premium, unless you're that other fruit user
