Had the old one, and liked it.

Does the new one still need to be plugged into an outlet to be used? That was a drawback.

It's available to order now from RIM's website. Rather odd that I had to find out that it was via Engadget instead of an email from RIM. Why bother signing up for information if you never get any. Oh well.

Anyways, the compatibility list has been updated since the original one came out - ignore my original post as the information there is out-of-date. You'll note that the Playbook is now listed as a non nfc compatible device.

    NFC enabled devices

    BlackBerry Bold™ 9930/9900
    BlackBerry Porsche Design P9981
    BlackBerry Bold™ 9790
    BlackBerry Curve™ 9380
    BlackBerry Curve™ 9350/9360/9370
Non-BlackBerry smartphones with NFC connectivity capability

You can also non NFC enabled devices using standard Bluetooth connectivity

    BlackBerry PlayBook™ tablet
    BlackBerry Pearl™ Flip
    BlackBerry Pearl™ 9100
    BlackBerry Curve™ 8900
    BlackBerry Curve™ 8500 Series
    BlackBerry Curve™ 8350i
    BlackBerry Curve™ 9300
    BlackBerry Bold™ 9700
    BlackBerry Bold™ 9780
    BlackBerry Storm™ 9530

    BlackBerry 8800 Series
    BlackBerry Pearl™
    BlackBerry Curve™ 8300 Series
    BlackBerry Bold™ 9000

    Other supported devices

Bluetooth enabled laptops and personal computers
    Bluetooth enabled smartphones

    Shipping is 7-14 days.

    Paying shipping sucks.
    $50.99 for Canada
Free Shipping over $75, $24.01 short.
Shipping for not making it to $75 is $25.68 (for me)

    $49.99 for US
Free Shipping over $50, $0.01 short.

I think I'll wait for Shop Crackberry ($5.95 if under $50) or another retailer to offer it.

I just looked at that as well. To ship it to me in Vancouver, BC it will cost $25.36! I dont know where the heck these things are being shipped from, but it doesnt even cost that much to send 5 pounds of textbooks to England from where I am.

Oh well, hopefully these will appear in real stores some day, but I refuse to pay such exorbarant shipping prices.

i just bought two. figured it was better to pay for a second one then spend $25 on shipping alone. If someone is in the Kitchener Waterloo area and wants to buy one of them off me (at cost) send me a PM and maybe we can arrange something.

That's a good idea. If someone is in Vancouver and wants to do the same thing, PM me.

I got mine. Works great. Typing this on my 9900 bridged to my Playbook with an NFC connection to the music gateway.

Prob a question more about the bluetooth platform than the device itself ; but, a device could hookup to more than one bluetooth device at once, correct?

I.e. - bridge to PB and play music to the gateway?

Or would I have to do as he said? ^^^

i got mine delivered yesterday. I don't have an nfc blackberry, but the blue tooth connection works fine. Very similar to version 1 in functionality and performance from what i can tell (with the NFC exception).

Comes with power cord and audio cables. I must admin the sound quality is better then i expected.

As for RHP23's question, yes I can have a blue tooth connection to the music gateway and one to my playbook from my blackberry at the same time. I was surprised it could do this!

just a couple other comments. With regards to range I find the version 1 of this to be a little superior to version 2. I can walk around my main floor of my house with no problems on the v1, but v2 will sometimes cut out. So if range is a concern and you don't need nfc, you'd likely be better served with the original version.

I do wonder if the sound quality is ever so slightly better with v2, but it's likely just my imagination. Sound quality is great on both.

Got mine this weekend and used it at a party I had. It worked better than I thought it would. It was easy to connect a number of different devices to it. I connected a 9900 (via NFC), a PlayBook, a Motorola Atrix and a Macbook pro at different times in the night. The distance was a bit disappointing to me, as it seems if a device is beyond 20 feet away, it gets a little sketchy (skips). Other than that, it's great. Definitely worth the $50.

New one is powered by a microUSB cable. The other end of that cable needs a power source (AC adapter, PC, car lighter adapter, etc), but it's a lot more flexible than just a plain old AC adapter.

I don't think so yet, but they better hurry up. With the high shipping charges for just one unit, they are loosing orders. Newer boxes will start coming to market and this will be forgotten.

Come on RIM, hurry up getting it to retailers or partner with Shop.CrackBerry.com so we can get a better shipping rate ($5 is fair).

I installed the music gateway in my car today. It was a snap. Only one problem. I expected that with either an incoming or out going call, the audio would be ported to the car's sound system...it isn't. Is there a setting I am missing?

This is an audio gateway, not a hands-free. I'm going to bet the device has Bluetooth audio profiles, but not headset or handsfree profiles.

Just have another BT device for calls (earpiece, handsfree device).

My understanding of this product is that it is not going to be in the retail settings; it is solely being sold from Blackberry directly. In other words, this is another fine example of RIM product, that is actually very good, being relegated to obscurity due to their inability to properly market their products via retail stores.

Just ordered one from blackberry's website. If your in the US the shipping was only 5 bucks so entirely reasonable.

Also my understanding is that RIM is going to be the only one selling the device and no other retail stores are getting them so might as well buy it through the main RIM site.

Its nfc enabled and can stream any bluetooth device, whats not to love???
