I just sold my iPad 2. I have an iPhone 4S and I just felt like I was defeating the purpose by carrying around two devices that did pretty much the same thing! I debated about having a Android tablet but after searching forums, doing research, and deciding my needs, I figured that a Playbook would be for me.

As of last night, Best Buy and Radio Shack had the Playbook starting at $199.99. I planned on going to Radio Shack because they had one in stock. Great thing I decided to call because they went up to $299.99 and after revisiting the Best Buy site, they are starting at $499.99.

Lucky for me, the online Radio Shack still had them for $199.99 so I was able to snag the deal but they are now out of stock as well. I wonder if it's because of the 2.0 update?

    What do you think?

Sheesh that was fortunate, I wonder if the UK will follow with the original prices soon.

Hope not as I still would like to pick one up for myself.

That would rule out a playbook for this consumer. No thanks for that money I can get a nice laptop with a lot more potential. I have seen Best Buy put one price on the shelves and on line only to have it reduced drastically when you hit the checkout counter. Could this be what's going on?

I have no idea why they operate this way but it's more common than I expected.

It's not just Best Buy. Staples has removed it from their website altogether and Office Depot has taken it down as well.

Office Depot increased the price to $499.99. Best Buy still has the refurbished units for $169.99 so there's still hope for you to join the PB clan. Refurb Playbook!

I don't think all this jerking around of pricing will do anything to build much needed goodwill for the playbook among consumers.

Nahhh, the individual retailers will just suffer sales; most people know they can buy the PB at the right price and from the source.

I've noticed this sporadic pricing as well. When I was looking to purchase a Playbook, I checked The Source one day, it was $199 then a few days later up to original. I opted for Staples which listed $199, then when I walked through the mall The Source had it priced at $199 again. I think it's confused retailers and perhaps RIM isn't clearly communicating the discount on new orders. I dunno. o.o

Maybe RIM is running low on stock of the original wifi only PB's, won't be refilling the channels and won't be manufacturing anymore.

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe cleaning out stock for the new versions?

Yes. They are not taking any on-line orders though. You have to walk into a store.

I thought during some announcement that RIM said the 199 was no longer a sale price but regular price?

Its hit and miss, many stores are back to 499 as of this weekend. Ebay still has them for well under 200 though

Yeah it all may vary, many stores over here have changed it back to the normal price ranges.
But if you look around you can still find some pretty sweet deals out there.

The Source still has the 199/249/299 pricing and states that it is valid until Mar 31. It looks like it is the retailers that are messing around with the pricing, not RIM.
