All of a sudden when my wife opens slider to get the physical keyboard the screen goes blank. Any ideas as to the cause?

I have the same problem, I posted a thread on this and someone said

"put your ear on the device when sliding it and if you hear an unusual noise then the sliding ribbon is broken (the ribbon connects the screen and keyboard)"

Sadly this did not work for me, but it might help you
