Rogers customers can sign up today for a free service that allows their mobile number to follow them to a PC or Mac for internet calling and texting. I set mine up and thought why not try on the playbook? The calling doesn't work as it requires software on the PC but the texting works fine. SWEEEET

You can also do that on Sprint.

To send a text message from your computer to a phone:

Sign in to My Sprint with your username and password
Click the My Device & Media tab
    Click the Messaging icon
Click Open the Web Texter site
In the To: field, type in the phone number
Enter the text message and click Send

This is not email texting or texting through the regular webportal, this is a dedicated site just for messaging and it syncs with your phones contacts including contact photos.

    Here is a couple screenshots.

You get the app from rogers.ca for your mobile phone. What it is designed for is to synch all your contacts with your computer and use your computer or laptop as a phone/text for your rogers mobile number. What makes it great for the playbook, is that after you have installed the app on your cell phone, you then go to the rogers "one number" web site using your playbook browser and you can send and receive texts with all your contacts integrated.

If you are a rogers customer, here is the link to get you started:
    https://www.rogersonenumber.ca/welcome/?locale=en_CA

After you register, Rogers will text a link to your blackberry to download the app that synchs your phone with the web site.

IMO, this is a decent but no way near perfect solution to the lack of texting on the playbook.
