    The Iphone is considered a premium smartphone. The upgrade cost will vary according to what type of phone you have now, and how long it has been since your last upgrade/activation. Full upgrade eligibility is 30 months. You are allowed to upgrade after 6 months but the early upgrade fee then would be pretty large. Here is how early upgrades work:

    QMD & other non-smartphones - $10 for every month early
    Smartphones - $15 for every month early
    Premium Smartphones (Iphone 4, Blackberry Torch) - $20 for every month early

    Hardware upgrades are usually $50 more than new customer pricing for the most part. You do however get a $50 mail-in/online rebate to bring it down to new customer pricing. There is also usually a $35 admin fee. Lets say you have a blackberry curve and youve had it for 24 month and you want to upgrade to the 9790 which is 99.99. Pricing would go as such.

    hardware = 149.99 + $35 (admin) + $90 (early upgrade - $15 x 6 months) = $225 x tax - $50 rebate.
