Ok ok it may or may not be Dead Space's fault...but here's my story of misfortune.

Today, with the recent sales of EA games, I eagerly purchased Dead Space. Upon installing and playing it for a bit when I closed the game I noticed two horizontal black lines....I thought ok maybe this is a one-off so I restarted the PB, nope; shut off and turned back on again...nope; hard reset, still no dice; reloaded OS and yup...that basically confirmed my fears...the two horizontal lines were indeed ROWS OF DEAD PIXELS.

I HAVE TWO NEW ROWS OF DEAD PIXELS!

So this couldn't come at a worse time, ok it can...nevertheless I am two weeks away from my trip and this trip was one factor to my purchase of a PB. So I called RIM and their customer service was world class. I spoke to a rep, he transferred me to an RMA specialist, and got an RMA pending.

They will repair my PB but I fear that it may not be done fast enough so I asked for a replacement instead. They said since I am still within my 90 days if I provide proof of purchase the odds are in my favor for a replacement.

Anyhow all this took me about 30 minutes or so on the phone with RIM and I am pleased (aside from the fact that I had to go through all this), it was painless and the reps were very polite and helpful.

I am still in disbelief about the TWO ROWS of dead pixels...however despite all this it I still love the little bugger.

The attached pictures were taken with my Torch 9800...a tad blurry but you should be able to see my problem...it may appear as one line but it's actually two.

Maybe they are stuck pixels as opposed to dead? Have you tried leaving the unit off a bit then turning it back on?

yes, inspect your playbook thoroughly at the point of sale (if there are restocking fees). set it up, download Screen Helper and check for dead and stuck pixels and light bleeding. see this thread:

i don't think those are either stuck or dead pixels. it looks like what the op has is some other software or hardware (something is putting pressure on the screen from behind?) related defect. stuck and dead pixels are a manufacturing defect that occurs on the screen more or less randomly. and the op clearly has a pattern - the line.

Don't be, I think it's just bad luck if nothing else, PB is a mighty fine device.

I would probably rule out software. I did a security wipe as well as an OS reload, lines are still there. Could be hardware 'cause my PB's back has a slight bulge...overall I'm unsure what caused this.

When the lines against a black screen (ex. boot up screen with bb logo) they are a multicolor gradient.

it does look like it's hardware. it's unlikely that the bulge is the cause. many people have reported the bulge.

it probably is a wiring/signal transmission (or whatever it's called) issue but i am no expert.

While playing NOVA, I went on an interesting journey after a glitch in the OS developed. I tried to do everything I could in an attempt to purposely crash the OS. I got an odd screen behavior occurring at one point. It seems that the display is actually divided into two sections right along where the OP's pics show his lines are on his PB screen. In my case, it wasn't lines that appeared but the screen scrolling that was uncoordinated between the upper and lower halves. The bottom would move but the top wouldn't follow immediately. The action is hard to describe but it clearly showed that the UI isn't one single "piece" but two. The lines in the OP's pics occur about right where the top of the keyboard would be when pulled up.

The good news is that a hard restart fixed the odd bugs created by the NOVA game but it took another soft restart to get things back to normal and performance has been normal ever since the incident including game play on NOVA.

More good news is that I couldn't kill the OS and I tried everything I could think of to do it. I would suggest to the OP that he try another hard or soft restart or two and see what happens. Btw, I believe the hard restart I performed during the course of that adventure is only the second one I have done in 6 months of ownership and the other time I did it it was also because of a non native app causing some weirdness.
