9790 being officially announced, will you go for the more compact bold (9790) or will you stay/buy the big beast? What are the factors that make you choose one over the other?

My thoughts: I will stay with my 9900. The big keyboard is one thing I can't live without (now that I am used to it ). In addition, the touchscreen can't really be used on a 2.44 inch screen (as far as I remember the size, correct me if I am mistaken). I thought 2.8 inch screen was also small for a touch screen device, but it turned that out there is plenty of room since you don't have an on-screen keyboard. Still, 2.8 is the least acceptable I think. In addition, HD video recording is also exclusive to 9900 in the bold family, a feature I use. My 9900's only con is not having autofocus, I would have gone for a tad thicker device for some more juice and an autofocus camera. And I'd rather have autofocus camera than HD video recording. Anyways I am staying with my 9900, I am glad that I didn't wait for the 9790, although it's a superb phone
What are you going to do?

bigger keyboard and charging pod contacts.

back in the day, i went from the 9000 to the 9700, and then back to the 9000 because i couldn't stand the tiny keyboard. i do like the compact design of the 9790..i thought about switching, but i'm sure the keyboard would bug me.

also, the 9790 doesn't have the charging pod contact like the 9900.

    sticking with the 9900.

That's correct... there are no charging contacts on the 9790, just the USB port at the bottom of the phone.

Looks like I can scratch this phone off my list. My Torch doesn't have charging contacts and I miss it BIG TIME. It's just not the same.

Which would suggest a charging pod with a USB slot... hey, look at this:

It's nice that it syncs, but it also cancels out one of the benefits of a traditional BB charging pod... wear on the USB port.

True. The contacts do make for an "easy on/easy off" process for charging.

I went with my Bold 9930 solely because (1) the larger screen and (2) the 9900/9930 was released first. Couldn't wait any longer to upgrade. BUT the 9790 looks like a great alternative.

I'm for the 9900. I'm going from the 9700 and the 9900's keyboard is way nicer than the 9700/9780/9790 keyboard. Autofocus is a big omission but the smaller keyboard on the 9790 out weighs that in my opinion.

what abaut that the 9900 has the worst battery life of all BB so far - that you can't get a full day of work done without recharging? #joke
one can only sincerely hope that the 9790 will come back to reality!!!

camera sucks big time on 9900 - have you ever tried to make a close up from a business car or a news clip - worked fine for me on my 9700/9780 and hopefully will on the 9790.

and you guys worry about charging pod contact vs USB cradle - i could't care less: both solution work and there will be no difference in usability!!!

can agree btw that the keyboard on the 9900 is really superior to all the other BB i have owned so far.

I have only ever used the USB charging port... although I am wary of the wear on it. My 9650 has lasted two years with that.

It's the autofocus that has my attention. I use my 9650 to "scan" receipts and all manner of documents in very sharp detail. Often, I snap the "scan" and immediate discard the hard copy. Then, I email the document to a few of my email addresses.

From there, I do not have to worry about storing, filing documents.... all thanks to the autofocus/macro capability. This is HUGE!

The (slightly) slower processor and smaller screen should result in longer batter life, too.

I'm wondering if the smaller bold will immediately be able to use all apps that are currently operable on the 9930?

I couldn't decide... so I went for both

I thought I'd never get used to the size of the 9900 after years with a 9700 and 9780, but boy was I wrong!

The 9780 and 9790 just feel tiny now, and I can't believe I lasted so long with such a small screen and fiddly keypad.

The 9780 is now retired, and the 9790 will only ever be used as an emergency backup phone.

All of the apps I use on my 9900 are already compatible with the 9790.

What Kevin said about focusing is the truth. I take photos up close so it irritates me to **** that no autofocus. Stop making so many devices and just make one or two that are great. I hope they read these forums. Overall, I will stick to my 9900 and then wait for the next big upgrade.

I just wanted to mention the raised buttons everyone hates. I too hated the look of them on the 9860 and thought "man they look cheap". I picked up a 9860 at Best Buy and took it for a spin. I have to admit they are very easy to find without looking and feel very nice when using them. In contrast, the 9900 buttons look much nicer but make it harder to distinguish which one you have just pressed. So I am taking back all the bad things I said about them.

There is only two reasons to buy the 9790 when the 9900 is available that I can think of, price and size. I know a lot of women were turned off by the size of the 9000 and although the slim profile on the 9900 improves on that, the 9900 is still just as wide as the 9000 and people with tiny hands are going to like that phone. The same way the 9700 form factor split the Bold fans into two camps.

No doubt, every time I use my work BB (9700) I find it so tiny and small now after using the 9900. Crazy difference. Can't go back now.
