Is it fine if only one of the 3G bands are the same with your 9900 and the network you use. The unit I have will be 1,4,8 and my country uses 1,2,5,6. Will 3G work?

The whole of Europe uses 3G Band 1 (2100Mhz), so both phones will work just fine.

Fubaz is wrong. You're in a Band 1 country so you'll be fine either way.

In Canada, Bell/Telus/Rogers all use 850 (Band 2) and/or 1900 (Band 5), so the 1/4/8 device wouldn't have 3G service on those networks.

The US is similar with AT&T (Band 2 and 5).

No. The bands are part of the phone's hardware, and these cannot be changed by software.

All i know is that t-mobile 9900 won't work (3g only edge) in most parts of the world.

I have an unlocked 9930 running on the ATT network. When I reboot the phone the default network selection sets itself to Automatic B and the Network Technology sets itself to Global. If I am in a 3G area I get full bars but none of my texts or bbm's go through. If I change the Network Technology to GSM, the Network Selection changes to Automatic and I am then presented with an option to change the Network Mode to 2G and I get a full EDGE signal and my texts and bbm's go through just fine.

Anyone know how to get this working on the 3G signal? I would love the extra speed for the browser.

You will not get 3G on that device on AT&T in the US.

Because your phone is in Global mode and the 3G signal is from Sprint's (or Verizon, whichever your phone's originally from) network.

Thanks for the answer - it was purchased via Amazon but came from a third party vendor and was originally a Verizon phone. So am I to conclude that it was not unlocked correctly or that it will never get a 3G signal in the US, even if ATT begin to support the phone?

Cool, but I wasn't referring to any "illegal" software. (I don't even how software can be "illegal") I was making the point that the bands are NOT "part of the phone's hardware".

If it is a Verizon phone (the 9930), it does not contain the 3G frequency used by AT&T. The only way it will get a 3G signal is on Verizon!

You would need a 9900 (from Rogers, Bell, Telus, Virgin Can) to get 3G on AT&T.
