- Hello all,
There is an online petition at the following link that's going to be submitted to VZW soon regarding the GPS receiver built into Blackberries which VZW has crippled so that it can only be used with VZ Navigator.
Please sign the petition.
Hopefully Verizon will listen and unlock the built in GPS receiver.
We buy the phones, which means we own the equipment. Verizon has no right disabling the gps which forces us to pay a recurring fee for VZ nav if we want to use the gps.

the FCC and DOJ say they do O.o08-22-08 08:23 PMLike 0 - Other carriers (Sprint) do not cripple the GPS so that they force you to pay more money if you want the navigation to work.
I own my berry and a gps receiver is built into it. Why does my carrier(VZW) has to cripple it? Answer me that.

- Still under contract. Don't get me wrong, I love the coverage and costomer service.
You mean to tell me that none of you agree with how I feel regarding the crippling of phone features???
Well excuse me, I thought you would like to have use of your gps and not for it to be crippled.

- By the way, Sprint's issues have nothing to do with them not crippling the gps feature in berries.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com08-22-08 08:53 PMLike 0 - Yes, vznav works fine. But it cost $9.99 per month and I want to use a different app so that I wouldn't have to pay for vznav.
Oh yeah, I can't use a diff app because VERIZON CRIPPLES THE GPS!!!
You obviously don't get it or your a vzw employee nslasha.
Please stop trying to justify the locking/crippling of the gps receiver in vzw berries. Thank you.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com08-22-08 08:56 PMLike 0 - I agree LiLiC, I don't mind that vzw charges 10 bucks a month for vznav, but they shouldn't cripple the gps receiver if you want to use it for other apps.
Thanks for the comment.

What bothers me about it is the Bit*hing and moaning and name calling and bashing. It just gets OLD!
As I stated before, if this is a feature that is that important to you, why are you with VZW if you know they disable it? there is a reason I am sure. There are also many other options to achieve GPS access.
I am sure there are reasons that VZW does this. Whether it is for making making money with VZNav or a Security Issue on their network, or whatever. It is VZW's business to run. kinda like no shirt, no shoes, no service. If the business chooses to serve you without a shirt so be it, but the guy with the shirt will complain about it and get others to do it as well.
Guess this will open a can worms, should be fun08-22-08 09:15 PMLike 0 - I use the Freedom Keychain GPS puck and subscribe to VZNav. I would not have the puck if the internal GPS wasn't locked to only Verizon's offerings. However, I really don't mind as VZNav is a competitive service and is very good at what it does. I use the puck when I need aerial photographs via Google Map and occasionally with BBMaps or Live Search. BBtracker is a must in my work when recording routes in the woods or on the road.
Verizon has every right in the world to cripple the internal GPS. Do you really believe that RIM would manufacture the CDMA Curve and allow their own product to be crippled without their consent? You're picking a fight with the wrong company!
I strongly agree with Verizon's right to do this while I strongly disagree with RIM allowing this. I would still subscribe to VZNav if the internal GPS was unlocked because the service is that good. I own four sub-centimeter Ashtech/Thales/Magellan GPS units and a Magellan eXplorist handheld in addition to my Keychain puck. An unlocked Verizon Curve would certainly be a nice complement when I needed a quick 'fix'.
Now, if RIM would have allowed the camera to have options for stamping the pix with time/date/lat/long........08-22-08 09:33 PMLike 0 - Yes, vznav works fine. But it cost $9.99 per month and I want to use a different app so that I wouldn't have to pay for vznav.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com08-22-08 09:42 PMLike 0 - Don't SHOULD on me. You knew it was going to be $10 when you signed up for Verizon. why stop there at GPS? Why not demand txting should be, free, then why should I pay for in coming calls? Well why should I pay for outgoing calls? If I don't pay for calls why should I pay for my data plan?
sorry I don't have a problem with a company trying to make an honest buck08-22-08 09:48 PMLike 0 - Originally Posted by incognito74

Wow now I have heard everything, Just because a VZW employee has option they are not allowed to comment in a public forum.
What is this world coming to?
As for I want to use another app sheesh people in HE*L want ice water too.
I want to run run LENUX with in my Microsoft OS, but guess that is not happening any time soon either08-22-08 09:56 PMLike 0 - Google maps, bb maps... These could all pinpoint your location using the gps receiver in your blackberry but, since the gps receiver is crippled by vzw, it will only work with vznav.
I don't mind that vznav is a service you pay for. What I do mind is that the gps is crippled so that it will only work with vznav.
By the way, if you read nslasha's earlier posts in response to mine, you would see that there is a condescending manner to her replies which prompted my response to nslasha.

and how you managed to pick out a condescending tone out of a bunch of words on the intarweb is beyond me.
fact of the matter is, pay up or switch carriers. i hear the other carriers have UNLOCKED gps, with less coverage!08-22-08 10:34 PMLike 0 - Google maps, bb maps...
