There is no Skype app for Blackberries period. Not even the Playbook
Sorry, wrong. Verizon has a Skype app available for its berries. Not a whole heck of a lot useful, but it's there. Now to the OP's question, I'm sorry, I don't have my 9930 yet, so I don't know if it works yet!
But I don't think they've enabled wifi use yet in anycase...
I use Skype frequently on my 9630 Tour from VZW. Use it the same way I use Skype on my desktop & lappie. I plan on using it some time after my familiarization phase with the 9930 Bold Touch some time next week, God willing of course.
After Microsoft bought Skype, and Microsoft wanting to "uniquely invest in RIM" -- who knows, they might ask them to allow the app to be released on all carriers.
Hey guys, i am just curious to know if you can get skype on the new bold 9930/9900? will i be able to make skype calls from it atleast using wifi?
thanks! hope someone who has one already can tell me if they tried installing skype and testing it.
Just downloaded the app from m.skype on my Verizon Bold 9930. Works great. However, it does not work on WiFi. The disclaimer from Verizon (on first launch) says so. Interestingly, it says '... does not work on Wi-Fi "YET"'.
I tried it too. Works fine but totally pointless for me. Only benefit is for international calling where you are domestic and someone else has Skype remote.

Skype works fine on 9930 for VZW. No video calling of course, but chat and voice (skype to skype at least) works perfect.
Although international Skype to Skype calling is probably the biggest cost saving feature, domestic calling is also a plus since Skype to Skype calls even within the US do not use minutes.
I really don't get why it works on Verizon but not on another other supplier. Seems like it has been this way for years... Thinking of not renewing my Skype account, not worth it for me with the cell plan i have anymore, specially if i have to be tied to a laptop to use it.
I've been a loyal supporter of blackberry because I am a fan of a communication device when it comes to mobile phones. Its simply the best. I was one of the first people in Asia with one, after having used them from corporate in the US. Countless of others have followed once they saw my device.
However they will be losing a loyal customer over their questionable management decisions. Sure skype is just an app, but for me it has become essential as my life/work/travel arrangements have changed.
I brought a 9900 in London a week ago, and planned to run it with an iphone or android - purely to run skype. This saves me as much as $500 a month + added convenience of picking up rerouted foreign numbers over 3G. Its a pain to carry two phones sometimes, pay two contracts, and constantly get mixed up.
Its a shame because it is not a hardware issue. Its not even software come to think of it. What were RIM managers thinking to give skype to verizon only? I don't even live in the US, so its not even like I could use Verizon.
So to countless others who switched because they complained of a lack of apps etc, and I used to think it was nonsense, I now understand.
I'm glad there's been a reshuffle at RIM, and hope they are able to retain their good employees.
