- Surprise surprise. It seems CDMA may have won the battle on battery this time around. As a longtime CDMA BB user who always felt like the underdog to the superior GSM devices, I am even more excited to pickup my 9930.
Edit: Not only that. It seems they have even managed to exceed the battery ratings of the older Bold models in many areas. Even despite the largely upgraded processor and smaller 1230mah battery. Technology....Last edited by UrbanGlowCam; 08-03-11 at 04:59 AM.
08-03-11 04:22 AMLike 5 - I think the trade off is worth it seeing the GSM BlackBerry can reach speeds up to 14.4 Mbps down and 5.76 Mbps up. I doubt a CDMA BlackBerry ever touches that since carriers haven't rolled out CDMA Revision B and don't ever intend to.08-03-11 04:42 AMLike 0
- The 9850/9860 has a much bigger discrepancy in terms of music playback...I wonder why that is.
9860
1230 mAh removable/rechargeable lithium-ion battery
Talk time: Up to 4.7 hours (GSM), up to 6.8 hours (UMTS)1
Standby time: Up to 13.9 days (GSM), up to 13.5 days (UMTS)
Music playback: Up to 44 hours
Video playback: Up to 6.6 hours
9850
1230 mAh removable/rechargeable lithium-ion battery
Talk time: Up to 6.8 hours (CDMA), up to 6.1 hours (UMTS)1
Standby time: Up to 13.4 days (CDMA), up to 11.8 days (UMTS)
Music playback: Up to 50.2 hours
Video playback: Up to 6.6 hours08-03-11 04:44 AMLike 0 - HSPA is far more battery draining than EDGE. I'm guessing HSPA+ is even more battery taxing than before. Long story short, while CDMA may be more battery efficient, it comes at the cost of speed.
Now what's interesting is when it's compared with the 9780. Check it out:
9780
1500 mAHR removable/rechargeable lithium-ion battery (compared to 1230 mAh for the 9900)
Talk time: Up to 6 hours (GSM or UMTS)
Standby time: Up to 22 days / 528 hours (GSM), up to 17 days / 408 hours (UMTS)
Music playback time: Up to 36 hours
That's with the larger capacity battery and smaller and lower resolution screen.Last edited by Masahiro; 08-03-11 at 04:58 AM.

I'm not surprised the 99xx has better battery life. Phones/operating systems are more optimized as they go along.08-03-11 04:52 AMLike 0 - That is hard to dispute, as most GSM carriers still provide the option of letting you use the 2G EDGE network if battery life is a concern. Its speeds are still comparable to CDMA 3G.08-03-11 04:57 AMLike 0

GSM's data speed capabilities are definitely superior with these handsets, there is no disputing that.08-03-11 05:01 AMLike 0 - The 9850/9860 has a much bigger discrepancy in terms of music playback...I wonder why that is.

As far as the 99xx being inferior in certain areas, all I can imagine is the led lighting throughout the keys. That's probably negligible though.08-03-11 05:04 AMLike 0 -

- That's best case scenario. If you're in an area with good HSPA+ coverage, 7-11 Mbps down and 2-3 Mbps up is completely plausible. That's the type of speeds I get with my Sensation and it has the same radio as the 9900. That's a lot faster than what the 9930 can put out.08-03-11 07:19 AMLike 0

- Those are some pretty fast speeds Karmaloop. I guess that is where the new GSM BBs really have an edge on the CDMA counterparts. I imagine you are in a bigger city, but still.08-03-11 02:15 PMLike 0
- That's really unfair.
9930's better cost less..

- Well, I'm sure that this is due in no small part to the fact that previous bold models (9000 & 9700 series) had 1500mAh batteries, whereas the Torch 9800 and 9850 both use a 1270mAh and the 9900 has an even smaller 1240mAh.08-03-11 04:14 PMLike 0

9850/9860/9930/9900 use a 1230mah
Edit: If you look between the 9800 and 9810, they have identical batteries and yet talk time has increased / standby decreased between the upgrade. Only thing I could imagine is that it is a change in software coding or processor. Personally, I think it's a combination. They really must have optimized the **** out of them.
