    I'm using a Dutch version but basically when trying to install a new OS on a fresh out of the box 8520 (it came loaded with 4.7 something) I'm getting an error there is no Blackberry Service Subscription detected so I can't upload. BB user's only etc.

    Could this be because the device is simlocked and I'm trying to update with a sim from a different provider?

    Update: I put in the (non-blackberry subscribtion) T-Mobile sim-card that came with the device and the update is currently in progress.

    But with the other sim inserted I can make phonecalls on that phone. So is it only the BB service that is simlocked somehow?

    No; but if you have the BlackBerry Internet Service, you have a licence to upgrade the firmware...
