Picked up a used curve from a friend. It is locked to Telus. My wife has a dumb phone and would like to try the BB as she is already with Telus. Is it just a matter of switching her sim card to the BB or is there more involved ?

If your wife has a "dumb" phone through Telus, it may not even have a SIM card. Most of their older phones don't.

And, if the old phone is not a Blackberry, you may have to get your plan changed.

I'm not sure, but you could probably call Telus or go to one of their stores and inquire.

The 8530 does not use a SIM card. It is an CDMA only device. So if the device is Telus branded, she will be able to use it on the CDMA side of the the Telus network. If she has a device using an HSPA SIM card, she won't be able to use that card, but again, she won't need it with the 8530.

You should inquire with Telus as the requirements of having a data plan on a BlackBerry on their network.
