I recently updated from OS6 .448 to .461. Immediately after the phone rebooted I noticed the SMS icon was no longer there. I checked my settings and in the Mailbox options > Inbox management when I have "text messages" checked I am able to see text on my email mailbox list, however when I uncheck this i am no longer able to see them in my email mailbox or anywhere else. I don't even get an icon alerting me that I have a new txt msg.

Any ideas how I can get my independent SMS icon back?

I had the same problem. I just did a battery pull and worked fine after.

Update...I decided to delete all previous sms's from my "joint" email and sms mailbox and after doing that the sms icon appeared...

This is a known issue with some on .461. Check the leaked OS thread for a fix if it continues.

Have you tried to see if the sms icon is hidden? Do show all and check?

I've encounted similar problem. after upgrading to .461, I deleted the BBM, and reboot, found SMS Icon disappeared. I wasn't about to send and receive SMS. even though I re-install BBM, the SMS just won't come back. until I re-install the OS.
