i have the white 9780,love it,but id love this otterbox commuter case and holster in white for it.looks great on the phone.i just shelled out �350 on my new 9780 pay as you go,so it'd be nice to have good lookin protective case for it the same colour.
The Seidio Innocase Rugged is pretty good too. I have both the Seidio and the Otterbox Defender, both have kept me from destroying my phone several times and the Seidio holster will hold the Otterbox defender.

Check out Amazon or Otterbox directly - there is a new Commuter case which has a white silicone with the black hard shell. Looks very sleek on the 9780 white BB. (Unfortunately, Crackberry isn't carrying this color combination yet).
The problem with the otterbox is that the phone can become really bulky, the 9780 is already pretty thick and adding the defender will make the phone too bulky.
I think a silicon case will do as the case of the 9780 doesn't have a big screen and will protect it from the regular phones the phone may encounter.
Silicone cases also have the tendency to trap dirt underneath and scratch the **** out of the bottom of your phone, I learned this the hard way.
I would say that depends on the quality of the silicone - the one which comes as a baselayer for your otterbox commuter is a very high quality one, and fits the phone very tight - there is really no fear of anything go under it.

I've never seen a Commuter up close, they have more than one layer like the Defender?
The Commuter case is a 2 layer, one silicone and a clip over plastic style to keep it all secure. I really enjoyed the Commuter for my 9700. I also like the Seidio Rugged Holster Combo for the best protection and for being the most secure in the holster. It has a clip at the top of the holster that keeps it very secure!
I work in a high dirt environment, the regular silicone cases move and flex and allow dirt in which scratches all the surfaces the silicone covers. That's why I have opted to get the big and bulky cases. The Seidio case is complete encasement and the Otterbox Defender is just about complete encasement.
