I don't get the whole 3G thing. I am in the middle of an area that has 3G coverage, in the manual it says that I should have a 3G icon if I'm receiving the 3G signal, and I've never seen it. Am I missing something? Does 3G really matter?

Yeah, only Verizon has the 3G symbol, as far as I know. Sprint says 1XEV
I believe this to be true. I don't think it has changed because mine says 3G and I'm on Big Red.

Depends on your OS and/or your carrier. Older vz BB's also read 1XEV. I believe att and tmo read 3G. That is assuming you are receiving a 3G signal. If you are in a weaker area it could read 1X, 1x, EDGE, edge or whatever.

You can also get themes to mask the 1XEV.

Sprint phones dont have the 3G logo. Sprint uses "1XEV" to show 3G. Verizon uses the 3G logo

Depends on the device. My S1 reads 1XEV.

Old devices like you have from Verizon dont have the 3G logo. all new Verizon phones for the last couple years all have the 3G logo, anything past 2 years old does not

I know. That's what I have been trying to explain by saying it depends on the device and/or OS.

yes Hooty, you are correct. Prior to my upgrade I had an 8330 Curve and it showed 1XEV, whereas my Bold 9650 I upgraded to last Wed. Shows 3G. My daughters S2 also shows 3G

The only way a Sprint Bold would natively show "3G" is if it were running on a UMTS network.

How about a 9650 unlocked for T Mobile ? Will it go on 3g or is it stuck on 2g ? Any service books to solve this ?

Only 2g...not a service book issue, but rather a hardware one.
