I use both. The Bold is mine and the company I work for gave me an 8520 and it really is a big difference. No GPS, no 3G, no camera flash and the screen res is like going back 5 years! I know RIM need a budget entry level phone but in my opinion the 5820 sucks big time! (If you own a Bold)

yea it does seem dated, I had the storm 1 and 2 before I got my 9700 and wow those are soo diffrent compared to this one, the keys are soo loud on this one and feel kinda cheap but it does type very well so I'm happy about that and I also use my phone as my MP3 player and the top media controls on this one are awesome! I do miss having flash and the camera on this one dosent work well but o well it is deff a entry phone but its not bad, I definitely can't wait to get back to my 9700 and my os6

I know the video capture is somewhat at 320x240. That's normal for entry level phones.

I hate how insignificant the 8520 feels. Plasticky and empty inside. Yuck!

I could never do it...I sub-contract for a big retail company and they use 8520's and have used a co-workers for a day, ended up switching out his OS and man, what a difference...still a BB though, so have to give it a little love.

I couldn't go from a 9700 to the 8520...the 8500 series of curves seem so cheaply made...

I was in a similar position a couple of weeks ago when my 9700 was looking broken. The 8520 is 150 on my network versus 350 for the 9700 at the time and 450 for the 9800.

Sure, the 8520 isn't as solid or have so many features, but when it comes down to what I bought my BlackBerry to do - reading and replying to emails, Twitter, using Documents-to-Go and the occasional browser use - the 8520 is just fine. I don't need GPS, 3G or the autofocus on the camera for these, they're just nice to have.

Would I struggle? A little, I might whine about missing features, but the 8520 has the essentials - BBM, voice dial, WLAN and Bluetooth...

I have a 9700 and an 8520 next to me. I've just switched from the Curve to the Bold. Yes OS6 and the nice camera are all fine and dandy, the 3g and high res screen are good too. But at the end of the day, core functionality is exactly the same, I've never had a problem with my Curve and in an otterbox commuter, it really is a tank. It has hit many many floors, and I've thrown it about 2 storeys high and let it land on grass while playing music. Ok, so the case helped but the phone still took the jolts. The Curve is a nice phone really, it's just one that is a bit last generation. I had mine 6 months and it did the job.

+1 I had Curve 8330, which felt solid, 8530 is flimsy and cheap feeling.

I have to be honest, i have a 9700 and i recently got my hands on a 9300 that i have switched to for awhile. I have to say i really like the 9300. I keep the 3g and give up screen resolution and the camera. But overall the 9300 running OS6 is a great device. I may keep it as my full time phone.

My 9300 actually feels like its built better and just feels great. Dont get me wrong I love my 9700 and have been using it for over a year, but this is a great change of pace for me, and i have no complaints.

I can see where the 8520 would have drawbacks. But to each their own. Just my $.02.

I think I'm going to recycle my 9700 tomorrow and pick up a new 8520. I will miss the 9700, of course, but the core BlackBerry functionality is covered by the 8520... So I will be adding to this, except, a bit longer term...

Wow I don't think I would be able to get rid of my 9700, the 8520 is kinda like going from having a caddilac to a corsica lol
