I have the 9800 in my hand--typing on it now, and the 9780 beside me. The 9800 is definately slicker and the 9780 is definately more of a work horse.
If I had to pick one (and I don't )... I would probably pick the 9800 but maybe not for the right reason. The reason would be that although the 9780 is totally fantastic in every way, and the 6.0 OS works really really well on it-- look wise, I feel like I'm looking at my 9700 which is kinda stale since I've had one (9700) forever.
So conclusion.... If you've never owned a 9700, go for the 9780. If you wanna have the latest greatest--9800.
Just my opinion. Sorry I can't give you a straight definate answer. I own a chain of stores (Mobile phone industry) so there's a bunch of EVERYTHING lying around to pick from. I'd hate to have to pick just one. If I HAD to though-- I'd pick the 9800 BUT I'D MAKE SURE THE SLIDER ON THE UNIT WAS SNUG. I've had loose and tight ones and the experience is totally better when it's snug. When you get a snug one, it stays snug. If you get a loose one, it gets more and more loose.

    Good luck

It is a matter of personal preference. Do you want a touchscreen slider or a candy bar form?

I have had the 9700 and the Torch since launch day. I can't imagine going back. The 9780 is a great device with a major hardware and software upgrades to the original 9700.

The Torch has more screen real estate and the touchscreen in concert with the trackpad and physical keyboard were made for OS 6. In addition to keyboard shortcuts, there is pinch to zoom and double tap as well as swiping that make messaging and web browsing more productive and enjoyable. You also have the option of a virtual keyboard. I haven't seen the 9780 in action but I am guessing that it does not have landscape mode.

You can solicit all the opinions and feedback that you want but the only decision that counts is your own. Go into a store and test each one to determine which one meets your needs best.

007 is definitely right about the "go mess with them live" part.

ps..... 007, if you liked your 9700 you'd flip over the 9780. :-)

I just got a Torch 9800 today after using a Storm 9530 (Verizon) since 2008. I absolutely love the speed of the Torch in comparison. The 9530 was my first BB ever so I had nothing to compare it to in regards to speed, functionality, the BB experience in general, etc. I have loved my Storm and realize it was slow as a snail, but I realize that it is a mobile phone, not a pocket computer.

All in all, I am totally enjoying my 9800 for the past 12 hours now. Serious upgrade for me - attune with how Mega-Man got his new weapon after defeating a boss for the first time.

    9800 > 9530
Totally, utterly content, like a suckling kitten.

    SMS text bug not fixed.

I am running OS .246 and am having no issues. There is an OS .337 version.

My 9700 found a home with my MIL who had her 8310 stolen. I know it seems that I don't like the Bold series but that is not the case. I just found that I like the touchscreen slider better.

The 9780 is better in every way possible!

    1) Better build quality

    2) Better Battery

    3) Better keyboard

    4) Better trackpad quality

    5) Faster OS 6 experience due to the lack of Touch screen

there is no room for comparision, the 9800 is a little boy's toy that gets boring in 5 days, but come to real world usage and heavy typing, the 9800 is crap, even a Curve 3G is better than a Torch.

    just my 2 cents

I guess the smaller screen and lack of pinch to zoom, double-tap and swipe makes the 9780 more attractive. In addition, the Torch still has similar camera and memory as well as OS 6 but also has keyboards shortcuts as well as a virtual keyboard.

Both devices are great and attract different owners based upon their needs. There is no need for 9780 fanboy flaming by calling the Torch a toy. The touchscreen, trackpad and keyboards increase productivity well enough to suit the most savvy, heavy duty business users. It is all a matter of personal preference.

Based upon what I have read, I don't believe that it was fixed in OS version .337. It is a very minor issue that should not be a deal-breaker in your decision. I am sure at some point it will be addressed in a later OS update.

Since you already have such a strong opinion on which one is better, i'm just wondering why this earlier today.

Most likely trying to justify their purchase of the 9780 to themselves
