Just got the 9780 last week as an upgrade to the 9700 and I'm pleasantly surprised at how the camera's quality has remarkably improved. The difference of 2 MP doesn't feel like the reason for it's improvement however. It seems as though RIM fit a much better sensor in here. Anyone know its technical specs? I'm planning on doing an iP4 vs 9780 comparison soon to confirm my suspicions

I upgraded from the 8900, which had, I believe, the same camera as the 9700. I agree that the camera performance on the 9780 is significantly better. And I agree that the addition of 2 MP probably has nothing to do with it at all. My guess is that RIM modified the software to create less compressed and therefore lossy image files. I base that on my observation that the image files, even at smaller sizes than maximum, are larger than they were on the 8900. I don't know if there's been any change in the optics or sensor.
Compared to my N8 the 9780 aint much good but for a 5 megapixel camera it takes some very competent shots in all conditions. Best thing about it for me is the speed of the picture taking process
+1. It focuses instantly and takes the picture instead of click - focus - shutter. I love it.
I have to agree with that. One of the major annoyances for me on my 9700 was waiting for the cam to load when I was trying to snap a quick pic...if I had a nickel for each time that a special moment passed by too quickly for my dopey 3.5mp cam to load on that thing.
Seriously, playing with these 2 side by side makes the 97hundo look like a clunker!
I have a 9700, and trying to take a picture of my 2 year old, inside, that isn't blurry is next to impossible. Right next to it. Almost touching. I assume that there aren't any blurring issues with the 9780?
