In the last week when my phone gets to one bar it completely shuts off and I have to put it on the charger. Normally it would go til the outline of the battery, give me warnings audible, flashing lights, etc. I'm trying to avoid having to call my carrier but I need to figure out what to do.. Is it my battery? I've had the phone less than a year so this seems odd.

I'd say you've been lucky. Usually the device powers off at around 15-20% battery. I have never let mine get that low, I charge every night all night. And if on days I'm a heavy user, when it gets to 30%, I give it a little "pick-me-up" charge. Batteries do wear out with age. A year old battery can start to loose some of it's "umph".
