its hard to diagnose issues with beta operating systems.........did it work ok before the leaked os????? if it did then the os is the issue....

I'm just throwing this out there, but is it possible your school has a firewall setup that might be blocking certain ports that BBM would use?
Sorry, I'm not sure this helps, but it may at least identify a possible cause. Although, i'm not sure what ports BBM even uses.

Downgrade back to 5.0 and see if it works like it should. Like we say, if it isn't broken, why fix it?
If OS 5.0.0.xxx worked fine, you didn't need to load up the leak.

If you can get e-mail via wifi, then the firewall won't be blocking BBM. They both flow over the SSL connection that the BB sets up to the RIM network. The issue should be something else.
