like the same bizarre love one might have for the Blackberry? BB is an old technology that is costly... They're like IBM very structured, costly and really do not want to change. There is a lot of new things happening and RIM seems to be the one always playing catchup. Just look at what phones developers are creating apps for. I was shocked to see a Home Depot app that tells you where everything is at in a store. Why can't there be one for the BB, oh wait BB users feel that they don't need apps and the only thing that matters in BBM , PUSH and a Keyboard

And Blackberry has government snooping capable proxy servers in any country that threatens to block BB service.

See, we can play that game too.

If you have to wonder if your phone is secure, then it probably isn't. I tend to look at smart phones and cell phones in general as one step up from the old party line in ma bell...if you do not want the whole world to know what you are saying and doing, don't do it on a cell phone.

This article sounds like a troll, but I just call it speculation.

I don't care much for security on a smartphone, nobody has ever eves dropped on my calls either, on my cell or landline.

Of course companies will look at other platforms. The explosion in the use of smartphones guarantees entries from companies and it also guarantees that as employees buy their own phones they will want to use them or suggest them in their work.
Some companies who currently use Blackberries may consider other devices. II actually asked my IT department to go over with me and to just open up to the possibility of using iPhones because I wanted to hear them for myself and I wanted to just sit and have a serious discussion about the possibility...they just about fell out of their chair.
If they need to control their employees' use of the device, they will do best with BES.
There is nothing surprising about that article.

Yes, I find it so "interesting," With the popularity of the iPhone and Androids, OF COURSE the employees are whining about switching to their favorite platform, it's human nature. After all, the average employee could care less about the company's security, they simply want a BIG screen and screaming processor; can't really blame them. But in the end, hopefully, the company will act responsibly and pick the BEST phone for their needs, whatever one that may be. Hey, I LOVE my Storm 2, but I want bigger and faster too! If RIM can't step up to the plate, then move aside. Like the old saying goes, "Lead, Follow, or get the he?? out of my way!"

Bes can force a password on your blackberry so you have no choice to turn it off.

For a company there's two forms of security, security for the user against others and security for the company against the user. The second one is the most important. How do you ensure the user doesn't access child porn on the iphone/android? Sounds extreme but that can ruin a company.

You can out a policy on an iPhone as well as android. So now IT departments have more centralized control of both those platforms. More chinks in RIM's armor. As the corporate world is using more and more web based systems the better web access is required. So the trends are all in place. It is up to RIM to react in a timely manner.

As far as snooping goes...do you want to know 1 thing that forced the delay in VZW's LTE go live? Law enforcement has to be able to tap into the phone and days communications as well as locate the device. Until the LTE tech was certifiedFor that, it could not go live.

So if someone wants to find out what your found they can. And if some ones to secure an iPhone they can as well. Just look at the business web site apple has up for the iPhone.

I'm not saying RIM isn't more secure, but the reality is that iPhone isn't as side open as people think. That is if you take proper measures to secure it.

Secure environment = BES. Its never about the government snooping its more about corporate protection and the inadvertent release of sensitive info. I know you will agree that has never never happened.

Except for its widely known practice of jailbreaking. For as long as there are ways to attempt to render an iT policy's controls useless, the iPhone platform will be deemed to be not as secure as certain environments need it to be.

It is the prevalence of jailbreaking and rooting that makes secure IT departments turn against iOS and Android. The very things that make them so popular for certain users render them insupportable in secure environments.

I'm wondering, if companies will be counting on the employees bringing their own phone, why would the user accept an IT restriction on their own phone? And if the device is not company's property it cannot be monitored in case of industrial espionage(don't laugh, it happens a lot, if it's a list of clients or list of wages etc or more serious). Recipe for disaster if you ask me.

Does any of this really matter anyway? If RIM collapses in 5 years (or 6 months like some predict )will current BB users stop using cellphones all together? Doubt it..you will pick up and move on to whatever suits your needs best at that time. All this speculation and "worry" over RIM is a waste of time imo unless you are part of the company and worried about your job.

Apple could make a big misstep and also collapse in 5 years, antennagate, glassgate; what's next?

Maybe as some predict an asteroid will hit the earth? Or in 5 years, RIM might turn out to be the dominant cell phone manufacturer.

Any predictions, stock picks from the prescient posters on this forum?
