Hi there folks. I am a South African about to leave for the UK for 3 weeks, now I've been in contact with my service provider and they want to charge a silly amount of money for me to use my bold in the UK.

So I did some extra reading on the unlocking of my bb BUT, one thing I couldn't find out was, if I unlock it, obviously it will no longer be connected to my service provider, but now was has stumped me was, if I unlock it, will I then need to pay RIM or BlackBerry for the BIS fee or what?? I'm confused haha

Thanks in advanced for your reply.

    Dixon.

If you unlock it and take it to the UK, you will need to get a SIM card from a UK carrier. You can choose prepaid, for a certain number of minutes. Some carriers also offer prepaid BIS. You would not need to purchase a prepaid data plan from the UK carrier if you do not want it.

ah thanks, awesome! that really helps! thanks

But one more thing, if I do unlock it, I won't loose the option of paying for my BIS to my service provider, I just won't have a locked phone?

Correct. You're always safe when you're unlocking.
