Sorry if this has been covered here but my friend wants an answer to this question and I figured you guys would know.
My friend currently has 2 lines on his Sprint account and neither of them are eligible for an upgrade. Anywho, he wants an EVO badly and he was wondering if he added a 3rd line and purchased the phone for 199$+tax out the door at Best Buy or Radio Shack, could he swap the phone to his primary line that he uses without any problems and just put an older phone on the newly opened line? Also, can he swap the ESN's as soon as he gets home?

Your friend needs to call Sprint and ask to be certain...and call up multiple times to get different reps. The most frequent answer is most likely the truth. Getting the truth from the first rep isn't guaranteed.
